I doubt its the shocks, Make sure you didnt tighten the shackle bolts down to tight. My rancho 5012s seem real soft on mine. almost too soft.

if your shackle angle is still relativly stright up and down it will ride stiff still! jiMMy

i would guess what jimmy said if at ride height your shackle angle is to vertical you will have a poor ride and limit the amount of down travel it might have .. you should post a pic of it ..
i would doubt it has anything to do with the shocks ..also when you say oem springs do you mean stock cruiser springs or do you mean ome old man emu ?
but overall it sounds like incorrect shackle angle

No no no not Old man emu I aint ritch!! I looked at the shackle angle and its about 75 degres or so not quite straight up and down

I have RS 5000's too and mine is way stiff! (the crusier that is) But the guy who "built" mine put two shocks at each wheel. any idea why? I have never seen anyone elses like this, could i just take one off each wheel? well anyways just wanted to say that mine is a really ruff ride.

Twig, I ran that set up when I first built my crusier. Two 5000 at each tire, that was one heck of a stiff ride <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">

Take one off each corner, they are just there for looks.

From what I understand 5000's are generally ruff riding shocks, unless you have a 5012 or something that is valved for dual use.

what model # is the shock? certain 5000's where valved to be used in pairs. Its an early 90's mullety kinda thing, we wouldnt under stand <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

It might not be the shocks at all, another approach you could try is to take the 2 shortest spring leafs off the bottom of your spring packs and see how she rides, you won't loose more than an inch of lift but it will make your springs way softer. I'm running my SOA rear this way and am happy with the flex and stiffness.

I've had friends complain about how friggin stiff their Doetsch Tech shocks were, however, that was on a toyota pickup.
It could be your shocks.

My RS5000s and RS7000s that I used to run on my cruiser were very soft (not worn out) and worked great. I had really old rancho lift springs in it and people would often comment on how soft the ride was.

BTW How what are your tires aired up to?

What size and brand of tire are they?

Also how wide are your rims?
These three factors can affect your ride quality.

I run 35x12.5 mud kings on 8 inch rims with the air pressure at 25 PSI. Even at this pressure only 3/4ths of the outer lugs contact the pavement. The 8 inch rims really crown these 12.5s.

Mud kings are a nice soft (read easily punctured...5 tires in 3 years!) tire that has a good ride.

I think the other people on here already mentioned that if your shackles are too tight they will give you a really stiff ride.
Use nylocks on your shackles or double nut them so they can be backed off slightly but no loosen up on their own.

Im running 36x12.5x15 swamper radials. On road around 28-30 psi. off road 14psi. 15x8 steelies for rims

You could probably lower your air pressure to the low 20s on the street, this would also help the tire to wear a little more evenly with the 8" rims.

When I had 36" tsls I ran them at about 24 on the street and at 10-12 off road.

A couple of people I know who had swampers ran them at 16 on the street and liked them that way <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> (into the single digits off road)

With a swamper you've got about 1" of solid rubber tread blocks = stiffer tire = stiffer ride (even though yours are radials)

Well I havent had any time to air up my tires from wheeling on saturday yet so they are still at 15psi when I drove home. Still was bumpy <IMG SRC="smilies/pissed.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/pissed.gif" border="0"> DAMMITTTT!!!!!!!!!

it was the shackle bolts? man, you musta cranked em down hella hard to limit ride quality. i wish i was that strong

Twig4790, BTB in San Jose used to really push their dual shock mounts, and I know at one point a lot of their clients ended up running them. Personally, I never cared for them, I think a well-thought out, designed and built suspension doesn't need them. Besides, then the rig starts looking like those cheesy Four Wheeler magazine cover shots with the chromed tie rods and color coded rubber boots...yuck!
