I've been swamped with questions. Today I will answer two...

Dear DieLucas!,

I own a 1993 Range Rover and my gas mileage is absolutely terrible. I have been looking at the Tornado as they claim an increase in both horsepower and fuel economy. K&N filters claim their filter may increase economy and so does adding a Borla cat-back exhaust system. Plus, I have access to jet fuel since I work at a small airport and service Cessnas.
So, if I performed all these modifications at the same time, would I see a huge increase in fuel economy and horsepower? Like, a 50% increase?

Doggin' It

ABSOLUTELY! But why stop with a 50% increase? Available to you are reprogrammed microchips for your engine's ECU (which stands for "Electricity Conducting Unit," so do not open; consult a professional), and small resistors that can be spliced into your engine's electrical loom at the MAF sensor (which stands for "Maybe A Functional" sensor) that will also give you increases in horsepower, mileage, and drivability.

I would also recommend that if you use a K&N filter, you should also remove the driver's side front headlamp assembly and locate the filter in the open hole. This will give a "ram-air" effect, and thus, more horsepower and mileage. The faster you drive, the more power and fuel economy you get. There's been reports, that at speeds in excess of 150 mph, HP is TRIPLED!

So considering the modifications you are looking at, plus the few extra I've suggested, it is quite possible that you may double both your horsepower and fuel economy. That's right, an increase of 100%. To get you started, I'm am going to mail you Honda "VTEC" and "Type R" badges, a couple of "Nawwwws" stickers, and a "Powered by K&N" windshield banner. These should add a minimum of 25 horsepower and a 4 mpg increase in fuel economy. These are hard to find perfomance items that will compliment your anticipated modifications!

Next question...

Dear DieLucas!,

I wrote to you earlier this week about selecting the proper oil for my Land Rover. I followed your instructions and the engine is running smoother than ever. I just want to say "thanks!"

I have another question. Now that I've found the right oil, what oil filter should I use? There are so many to choose from. Each having varying degrees of fancy packaging and optimistic claims on the box. I was going to buy this inexpensive Fram oil filter that claimed increase engine life, filtering ability, and personal hygeine on the box...but then I saw this super expensive Mobil 1 filter that had no claims on the box. How can Mobil 1 get away with charging an arm and a leg for a plain oil filter that doesn't do anything special? What should I buy? Also, I've noticed the transmission making very odd noises. Especially at stop-lights. Is this normal?

Good to hear back from you OILver!
Let's start with your first question. Yes, it is a crime that Mobil 1 charges a horrendous amount for a filter that claims to do nothing. I smell class-action lawsuit, and the pay-out could be big if you're willing to accept the risks. On the other hand, I would purchase the cheaper Fram filter you mentioned...and maybe buy three more with the money saved. I will mail you a simple technique, using duct tape, to connect these 4 filters in series to quadruple your filtering abilty. It will really add miles to the engine's life.

With respect to your transmission, are you keeping the engine's rpm above 3500? Are you leaving it gear and heavily applying the brakes at stop lights? If so, you are using the right technique and the noises are normal. If they become too annoying, you can increase the engine rpm to 4000. The engine noise may drown out the transmission noise. Or you can pop in the complimentary Milli Vanilli CD I am sending you; this will cancel out the noise, too.

Well, that's todays technical question and answer session. Now for today's Halloween hints to make the upcoming holiday more festive.

Display to your neighborhood your "Redneck Rover." Yes, the neighbors will get a kick out of Solihull's finest sitting on blocks in your front yard. Very simple, just remove the four wheels and immobilize the vehicle on jack stands. You may even position tall grass around it to give it that "backwoods" effect. Overalls and a wife-beater, plus children running around naked will give it that extra-special Foxworthy touch. Happy Halloween!
