I have a 88 wrangler with the gay ass Puegot transmission mated to the stock NP231. My question is will a Ax15 bolt up to my straight 6. Which has a lower first gear? Or should i go with a AX5??

If you want to find out, check out www.Jeeptech.com

it says "All AX-15s have a 1 1/8" 10 spline input shaft and a 23 spline output shaft" and the Pugeot "input shaft is 1 1/8" 10 spline" the output shaft is either " 21 spline or 23 spline"

I guess you'll have to pull your T-case and count the splines on the transmission output shaft, hoping and praying that it is the 23 spline shaft...

If you have the 21 spline out-put shaft then you'll need either a new T-case, or read the info below... also from jeeptech.

"There are versions of this chain driven transfer case that take 21 and 23 spline input shafts. The 23 spline version is used behind the AX-15 and the 21 spline is used behind the AX-5 and the BA 10/5... If you own a 21 spline NP231 and you want to swap in a 23 spline transmission, you can either look for a cheap 23 spline NP231 at the junk yard or go to your local Jeep Parts Dealer and order up a new input shaft part #5300-6085. This is the part you need to convert your NP231 to 23 spline input."

Good Luck

go with something stronger and with a lower first gear than a AX-15. I wasted my time twice installing ax-15's but kept destroying them.. now im automatic :D If you want to stay with a stick do like ant said.. those tranny's are beefy

bigblackjeep,
A good retrofit for the '88 YJ/I-6, is the Ford NP435 and Ford Dana 20 t.case. It's a bolt on with the 6.5" stickout shaft if you use the '76-79 CJ bell housing for the T176/T150. The t.case is a driver's side hanger so will work with the YJ front axle, and has only a 1" thick factory adapter that will help lengthen your rear driveshaft, big time. My bro sold this combo a couple years ago to a YJ fan. It's the sturdiest trans/t.case you can bolt on behind your I-6 short of an Atlas. I just sold an NP435 in great shape 2 weeks ago for $200. Don't throw good money after the AX5/NP321.
regards, as always, jefe

Ok so its a bolt on! How low is a Np 435 and im guessing its just a 4 speed. Is a dana 20 and strong transfercase. And can you put a 4 to 1 in it.

Np435 is 6.69 . 1 first gear Granny

this is what i am suggesting also the T18 is 6.32.1 first gear granny
