: Dana 20 Pops out of gear

I searched this topic and came up with nothing so here goes. I swapped in my 350 and turbo 400 bolted to a 1970 wagoneer dana 20. I tested the transfer case in the jeep before I gutted it and it worked fine. Well I don't have my axles swapped in yet so I don't have a front driveshaft so I haven't tried low range. I've driven it to work and back every day for about a month. Today I was in a traffic jam so I figured I'd drop it in low range and just crawl along in traffic. Well I discovered that this thing pops out of low. My first thought is maybye I didn't cut the hole in the floor big enough so its not getting all the way in gear. But I removed the boot and the shifter stops before it hits the floor. what are the other posibilities? I don't know much about what makes these transercases work. Anyway any input?

Try a Bungee cord...

I know a lot of other guys do...

(something about the little extra tension...)

Try searching the BB. I remember a thread or two on this subject, it was either here or there, probably there. Might have something to do with the poppet springs.

Edit: useless observation: We all registered in August.

bungee, work good and is just the right price :D

or you could shim the poppet springs, and/or get a stiffer spring, make sure every thing is in good allinment as well and not sloppy.

I can't believe a search didn't bring up anything, I have read simular posts all the time here (PBB) and the BB....

It's either the poppet spring on the shift rail or, in some cases, if the endplay is off on the output shaft. For how much of a PITA it is to just replace that little spring, I'd go bungee.
