I'm doing a Vortec 350/NV4500 swap on my 79 FJ40. I was looking at the ground clearance under the transfer case and it just looks like the transfer case is hanging kind of low under the frame to me. I'm using a new crossmember under the adapter to support everything so it acts as a skid plate. It hangs 4-5" below the bottom of the frame rail. I really wanted it tucked up higher than that. With the gas tank being underneath on my 79, I can't really get this setup any higher without hitting the gas tank or the bottom of the tranny tunnel with the NV4500. I really don't want to pull the tank out and put one of the rear mounted auxilliary tanks in if I don't have to $$$. Although that would allow me to keep the exhuast tucked up higher as well. How far down does everyone elses transfer case or skid plate, (which ever is lowest), hang below the bottom of the frame rail that is. Anyone got any pics of theirs with a conversion, from the side?

Hey, nice article in "Trails". I recognized the rough draft you sent me a couple of years ago, and your final was great. My TC is being rebuilt as we speak with Marks' 3:1 gear set. The 5.3 Vortec has been installed. If the tranny and TC go in soon, I'll send you a pic.

i came across the samething on my fy40. did not like the amount that the trans/tranfer hung down below the frame. i already had installed a 2.5 body lift years earlier, so all i did was raise up engine and all so now i have a flat belly pan. worked out great.
