: Some Steering opinions
Daren Rabago 12-13-2001, 10:09 PM Hello, another newbie, and I have a kind of newbie question.
I'm just about finished with the spoa on my 88 'zuk, and now have to address the steering. From all I can find, and from what I have driven, a dropped pitman arm and Z-link will give me bumpsteer. i did use the search, and found that a bunch of you have different kits for cross-over, and say you like 'x' or dislike 'y'. I want to know why you like or dislike, or experiences. I've been looking at the Breeze kit, or I know Spidertrax does a custom kit with heims. Also heard about Andy's Samurai Steering out of OR, but I haven't seen it . Any input on one of these, or the others would be great.
Also, the front axle has been moved forward approx 1.5", and the spoa is with wrangler springs, and a shackle reversal, and the springs have been inboarded. 33x12.50 swamper radials, and 4.56 gears (for now) I don't know if any of this info should influence what I do. This is the first 4x4 I've built that doesn't say Jeep on the side.
moto261 12-14-2001, 01:13 AM its good to see you j:confused: :confused:pp guyes getting in to something that you can really have fun with :) any how call trail tough i think they make one to and he is really cool :massey:
Azrckcrawler 12-14-2001, 05:33 AM Is the Breeze setup really $375, looks like steering arm and drag link? That's a little much. I had the Trail Tough setup, cost me $279, included a steering arm, drag ling and new tie rod along with the new ball joints that had grease fittings on them. It was a very nice setup.
0ILBURNER 12-14-2001, 06:42 AM I don't know about the T.T. kit.
A know 2 guys who have run the Breeze kit (CSR on this board being one of them) and both of them have been very happy with them. Never heard of any breakage with them, either.:)
(There are some out there in use that I have seen break)
The deal with bump-steer is that you must re-position the drag link (the arm that connects the pitman arm to the rest of the steering). It needs to be as close to parrallel with the tie rod as possible - the more out-of-parrallel, the worse the bump steer will be. Bent/twisted/saute'ed drag links in the shape of an "S" or "Z" will get you 'wheeling but will not help with B.S. A drop pitman arm will help some but unless you raise the point at which the drag link connects it won't be enough = crossover steering arm.
scwafish 12-14-2001, 07:18 AM IMHO the Breeze kit looks to be the highest quality set-up out there. I have eheard nothing but raves from people that have it. The Higher Heights kit (Petroworks) is similar but I found half of a steering arm on the con this summer...Yikes! Z-links work, but not well. I have seen some last, other fold almost right away. Like Burner said they do nothing for bumpsteer. Getting your steering right is almost never cheap, but worth the money. Especially if its not trailered.

Don't forget Breeze is Canadian. The price is comparable to TT.
:D
DougO 12-14-2001, 03:46 PM Whats nice about the breeze in my opinion is that besides using the 2 caliper bolts it also uses the 4 king pin bolts as well as incorporating the king pin into the arm. Making it more stout in my opinion.
But then again I'm a newbie I think still so my opinion probably means Crap :flipoff2:
Only thing I personaly dont like about it is the tie rod ends on the new drag link are both right hand thread so you have to remove 1 side to try to straighten your steering wheel instead of just twisting the link. I've been to lazy to fix mine so my wheel is 180 off.
samiguy 12-14-2001, 04:49 PM take your steering wheel off and put it on the correct way, takes 5 minutes

That 375 is canadian.... divide it by two and you probably have the american price.... in the end it is probably cheaper than the trail tough one by far!

It sure does but when the stering box is off cuase all I did was that, and I've lost my turn cabability in one direction, then whats the good in doing that.
