: Hybred Mog axles

I picked up a set of U1300s back in the spring and I am now ready to work on them to get them set up for the next buggy.

I need to narrow them, and swap out the centers since the pinion are just too damn long and lighten them up a bit, these bitches are heavy.

Ideas: Nodular iron 9" 3rd members w/ ARBS-- do the mog shafts provide for running 40 splines(I'll get the ARB broached) or am I going to be getting them made up as 35 splines.

D60 centers I think will be too heavy and overkill when I can get the big pinion for the 9" just as easy.

Brakes-- these things have 2 calipers at each end, I figure I can ditch 1 caliper set up per side and be fine, is this correct.

Trying to get the overall width of the axles with tires down to 74" outside width with a passenger side drop to work with a D300 T-case and a centered rear. Figure I'll be calling either Wolfgang, Ryeguy, or Jack at CTM for shafts.

Can I make a flange for the U1300 portal boxs like the 404s have to bolt up to the 9"/D60 center?

Is there a market to sell the additional calipers and the centers to someone? I'd like to try and make up some of the costs?

Beadlocks, figure I'll run hummer rims like on my 60/70 combo and just recenter the rims, unless someone has a lighter set-up available? Aluminum beadlock?

Come on guys, ideas, suggestions.

Why not just use 404 axle portal boxes?

What tires are you going to run?

Personally, I don't see the use in butchering one of the strongest axles available because the pinion is just too long. If you want a narrower axle you could always run a 406/416.

Didn't ford use a D300 in the F150? why not use of those?

Let me try to take a stab at this without sounding like too much of a Mog purist.

I think that narrowing the axle would be the way to go. I think introducing other stuff that isn't "Mog" will only create problems with this set up. The 1300 is waaay burlier than the 404 axles and will require lots and lots of attention.

Alot of the overbuilding of Unimog stuff is necessary due to the torque and the weight.

As far as selling the "leftovers" there are plenty of places to try. You could contact a dealer from a link on www.rockymountainmoggers.com or try http://unimog.net/exchange/ and post it for sale there. You will be asked for pics because we're very visual creatures..hehe

As for the wheel ideas i'm sure that there are some aluminum wheels out there that work but might have a problem with the weight/torque.

Let me know if this was of any help.

Later.

I would be interested in the centers for the right price.

Right now I am pricing up the 9" centers and housings and parts. Should be able to start working on them sometime next week.

Been talking to Charlie about it. He's about done with his, using his 404 outters. I'm doing the same thing but with the U1300 outters.

Was going to try and drive up to see his this week, if I can get everything scheduled right.

Thats a long haul. Good luck to ya. Took me like 5.5 to get there. The last 30 miles or so is the worst. Traffic is so damn congested around the Hudson. I just bought some 401's from him to use under my new buggy. When you thinking about going up?

Those rears look real nice. I wish I would have taken the camera up with me when I went.:)
