: setting up a Q-Jet
TxCruzr 11-01-2003, 02:55 PM I have already searched put did not find what I was looking for
I'm about to swap in a chevy 350 into my FJ-40 and it is going to be carberated. Will probably go with the q-jet since I haven't heard many good things on the truck avenger. What have you guys done to your q-jet to get it to run better at angles...are just run it stock. Also, there are a few different ones for sale if I go for a new one. Are they all the same when it comes to off-road performance(ie. angles)? If you have the part numbers for them post that also.
Thanks
Joseph

TxCruzr 11-02-2003, 09:35 AM those are some good links...thanks
florida4x4 11-02-2003, 07:54 PM Cool, glad you like. spent over 6 months collecting those... I think that is all there out there worth looking at (or my search skills still suck :D )
scwafish 11-03-2003, 05:49 AM I bought a new one from Edelbrock for my last rig, it was quite pricey at about $500, but it ran great out of the box and worked flawlessly for over 6 years. I did a bunch of wheeling and lots of folks that saw it run assumed I had FI. One of the better purchases I have made over the years, and a million times better than the Holley I had before that had every offroad trick in the book.
Avoid the lesser Edelbrocks around $200, they suck.
florida4x4 11-03-2003, 06:30 AM I second the edlebrock quadrajet. set you back about $450 but you will save headache that you might have with a +20 year old possibly warped and incorrectly modified/rejetted factory carb.
If you do rebuild it, it's a good idea to return the carb to the factory jetting and start tuning from there. If thejetting information is not already in the tuning doc on my site, let me know the carb number and I'll look it up in my big rochester book ...

Turn it around backwards!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know sh?t about carbs and mine doesnt idle perfectly because i haven't taken time to figure out how to adjust it. Buy a Eldebrock q-jet new for about $450. Bolt it on backwards and it will runs its ass off without fail at just about any angle you'll want. :D
Good luck
TxCruzr 11-03-2003, 09:46 AM I'll probably start with it facing the right direction and flip it around later if I need to. The one thing about flipping it though is the intake. Try to explain it in my attached pic.
Some intakes are like #1 where the primary and secondary slots are different sizes. You wouldn't be able to flip the carb around with one like that right? But if you have a intake like #2 then it is alright, correct?
Scawish, thanks for the advice...I'll probably go that way.
I also saw this on the LC board.
Try a fuel regulator set on 1.5 - 2 lbs. That is what I use on my Edlebrock to keep it from flooding.
Sounds like another good little tip.

florida4x4 11-03-2003, 10:39 AM yeah q-jets dont like much more than 5 psi.
dont know about flipping the carb around cause I never did it. my guess is that you would modify a spacer to fit on any intake you have, spreadbore or squarebore. Then use a aftermarket throttle cable...

I did'nt see your pics. But if you have a rochester q-jet intake with the small primary and large secondary pattern , you won't be able to do it.
I've got an ordinary square bore elderbock intake. Then I use a rochester q-jet adapter that has the square bore bolt pattern on the bottom and the barrel pattern for the q-jet's small primaries and larger secondaries on the top. I turned the adapter plate around with the carb; then got an Auto Zone universal thottle cable.
I really don't know crap about carbs but this was simple to do. I bolted my q-jet on the right way when i first got it and it fired up and ran perfectly out of the box. However, it still ran like a carb on the hills with slightly better behavior than my old holley 2-barrel. Turned it around backwards and problem solved. It still ain't fuel injection....but damn near close. I'm satisfied :D
fj40charles 11-03-2003, 06:30 PM If you're going to spend $450.00 or more on a qjet, why don't you consider doing an EFI conversion using GM parts? I'm sure you could round up the throttle body, ecm, wiring harness, sensors for around the same price if you shop carefully.
Talk to Butch Baker (texican) about his conversion.
TxCruzr 11-03-2003, 07:49 PM You didn't see my thread in the LC section on headers did you:D
I'm a poor high school kid and can't do the work due to limited space, time, tools, and knowledge. I have talked to some big time 4x4 shops and some local shops and all of them quote big bucks for the swap...one shop quote $5-6k on labor for efi engine alone:eek:
I can atleast work on the engine some with a carb and save some money. Latter on when I get enough cash I'll swap in a injection kit. I've had the cruiser for about 3 years and have only driven it to school about 20 days all together. It's my senior year and I just want to get this thing running, I mean common, it's the pimpest ride in town:flipoff2:
I think that'll explain why I'm going carb.
