Thinking out loud.......

With all the high-strength parts available for D44's now, were is the weak part?

Take a front D44, say with 4.56's to keep some strength in the pinion, add WARN (or simular) front alloy shafts, the new Super Joint (forgot the name/number, anyone? Jesse?), Alloy outer's...

is the weak link now the hub-lock?? What.

I was thinking, put all those parts in, then WARN's hub-fuses, and now you have a nearly bullet proof D44 that has a cheap $12 and easy replace part that pops first.... Will it pop before a standard D44 or after?? I could replace fuses, or even hub-locks all day for the price of a u-joint takeing out both yokes.... or the time it takes to swap a shaft on the trail.

and PLEASE, don't let this turn into a 60's are the best thread..... I don't have the $$$ to drop on a 60 now... but I can piece together a killer '44 and I have 50% of the parts already. Plus I can ALWAYS get a '60 later should NEED to go that big.

I'm willing to bet that Warn standards might be the first to let go with CTM joints and Warn alloy shafts. Warn premiums would probably move the weak link to the differential/locker assembly... I don't know though...

Those Warn Hub fuses are designed to break before a 297-X, so I'm thinking that switching to CTMs or 760-Xs would be pointless. with the hub fuses... only bad thing about the fuses is you're not supposed to use 'em with a Detroit--they let go to quick and wreck something in the Detroit I guess...

I'm thinking of trying those hub fuses... I just have stock axles and 297s... Anybody had any experiences (good or bad) with these?

You guys must have missed the article on the Warn fuses in one of the rags, now granted this is without a high strength U-joint in the mix, but one of the rags tested em. The U will let go first if the wheel is turned, the fuses only work if the wheels are straight, not to say those rules apply with a CTM joint. But when the fuses unload it takes out other components, in this case a lock-rite. Warn claims that full Detroit's and ARB can take the abuse of the joint letting go, but not lunch box lockers. So chances are you are going to take an axle before the fuses, because how often do you break front end parts when the wheels are straight ahead.

Yeah. I missed it. I seem to remember somebody on this board saying that Warn Recommended NOT using it with a detroit or ANY automatic locking traction device... They said this was on Warn's Website and that they only recommended using the fuses with an ARB, Ox, or a spool...

I dunno. It definitely makes sense that the U-joint would break before the fuse when the wheel is turned though... And jdjanda is right that that's usually when they break anyhow, so why bother with the fuses at all--maybe you really would need a stronger joint to take advantage of a fuse...

IMHO, those fuses are pure SHITE!!

Check Warns page yourself - no go with full Detroit.

And that rag article, they busted some thing like a few U-joints, shafts, locker etc....major carnage...and pathetically, predictably still gave the thumbs up...how pathetic.
