: BIL's Scout First Snow Run
Hooper 11-03-2003, 11:27 AM Wasn't much of a wheeling trip, but we did have to shift into 4wd to get up the last bit of the road. Took the kids out sledding this weekend. I took the opportunity to snap a couple pics of his rig, after it has been re-reworked. Looks much, much better now. Haven't had it out to flex yet. That will be this Saturday....

Harvester of Sorrow 11-03-2003, 12:07 PM Hey Pat....

binderbound 11-03-2003, 04:47 PM I like the bump stops.
JoshC 11-03-2003, 04:48 PM Looks great. Is that the same rig that some shop had booty fabbed so badly?
scoutver5.7 11-04-2003, 09:36 AM Lookin good Patty. :D

I like 'em too, however, they look too darn close to the axle at rest. It sure won't allow much travel both sides at once. Should twist up pretty good though.
How's it work Pat?

36 x 14.50 I believe

Yes, they are going to rub... ;)

Probably not snow. Reiter pit.... tree trail.... power line trail...stairsteps.... v-notch

Yep. This is the one. Basically an entire re-work.... MUCH better now....
Only problem is my BIL wants to paint it... <sigh> So, I am hoping to get him some good sheetmetal damage this Saturday so he will deep six the paint.. ;)

Don't know how well it will flex. The stories is that those bump stops collapse substantially, so that the axle can still move, but we will see on Saturday. Keep in mind that with 36's, you get into sheetmetal really quickly, even with the fender trimming he has done.... I know of a few nice rocks we can pose him on Saturday to see how well he flexes.
He is sold on the IH size though. He didn't design it to be a rock crawler, rather an all around 4x4 type. He specifically chose the SII because of the large cargo space. He has two kids, and I have three, and we need that space for camping trips. He really liked being able to take sleds, snow gear, chairs, etc, on the snow outing. Stuff that just could not conveniently be taken along when he had his Jeep.
So, he built it moderately big, paid money for the important stuff, but didn't get extreme with the size... Pretty good compromise between a family fun rig, and a wheeler. That is just about where I would like my rig to end up eventually. Unfortunately, I don't have the cash he does, so my buildup is a bit slower.. ;)
T1H5_TA3 11-04-2003, 10:05 AM yha, those bump stops squish prety good.. nice and progresive..
you can soften them up a bit byputing a slit in the center peice..

This we can do no problem. But how does he feel about that?
Or does he know?

<chuckle>
He keeps looking at the dents in my truck and saying
"When we go through that type of section, I am riding in your rig..."
;)
We'll see. I think he wants to keep all four wheels on the ground... I keep telling him he is going to wrinkle his sheet metal pretty quickly... but we'll see.... ;)
You remember what it was like when you had straight sheet metal, and the that beautiful, rare Aristocrat... Whatever happened to that beauty, anyway?? :D :D :D

Yeah I remember, faintly. I also remember that once there's a good dent the rest don't hurt so bad.:D
No reason to abuse his rig but if he wants to break it in I'm sure we can accommodate.;)

for your BIL, thats pretty good.... expecialy since he tends go over board and throw money at things that he gets in his brain is "the way to go".....
I think the paint looks fine.

Yep. He went moderate. Ended up with a very capable, useful rig. Just about what he needs. His driving skills can grow into it, but it is forgiving enough to survive while he is learning.
His first lesson is going to be, as you pointed out yesterday, wheel spin = bad.... But, I pointed that out to him after he got stuck on that hill that I chugged up...
troutbum 11-04-2003, 03:36 PM I like the designation on the rubber RF, RR I always hate it when I am under the scout wrenching and I forget which corner is which.... :D
muskyman 11-04-2003, 09:30 PM is just the pic or is the pitman arm gonna hit the driver side spring once stuffed?

If he takes a main leaf, cuts the eyes off and puts them in the pack that will give him another 1-2" of lift without destroying the ride quality (making it stiff).
I've done that to clear 35s without fender flares, I'm sure his 36's would be just right.

It should clear. With the clamps on, and those bump stops, those springs are not going to get a negative arch. He should be OK, but we will see Saturday...

So while he's riding in your truck, you can drive his thru and hook him right up with a little tree/rock lovin'!
Any word on the election yet?

Lost by 700 votes. My opponent sent out a flurry of hit pieces in the last couple of days, and I guess the voters believed him.
scoutver5.7 11-05-2003, 04:04 PM Sorry Pat,
My guess is you didn't play as nasty (LIE) as he did.:flipoff2:
Better luck next time?

Gidianton would be proud of him. ;)
Next time send out leaflets that say "Vote for me, Pat Decker, for the simple fact that I won't spread lies about my opponent to get your vote" at the same time.
Look at the bright side, at least you didn't lose out on the the entire wheeling season. ;) ;)
You'll take him next time.

no doubt. Sold his soul for office is what he did. I think I gave the local residents too much credit, though. I thought they would see through his lies and innuendo, but I guess not. I really believe it was his negative campaign that won him the election, and that is a pretty sad statement!!!
True, lots of wheeling left to do this year, and I am going to be playing hard on Saturday!!! :D :D :D
On another positive note, I met a lot of influential people during this campaign, and it never hurts to have rich, powerful, influential friends... ;)

Sorry to hear the news. I know you put a lot of time and sweat into that election.
FWIW, great job on the effort you put forth.:)

Thanks. Yeah, a lot of time and effort. Sometimes I catch myself thinking *what a waste*, but most of the time I just think of it as a good investment that will pay off, someday.. ;)
Looking forward to Saturday!!!

Thanks. Yep, it is a bummer. Tomorrow at 5pm they will report the interim results, that is election night poll votes plus the absentee ballots that have been counted so far (by friday most of the absentee ballots should have been counted) so I expect to close that gap somewhat. I'd like to be within 500 or so votes, but we will just see.
Too bad you cannot make it Saturday. Been a while since we were wheeling together.
