: Under hood air on a PSD.
phloop 11-03-2003, 01:36 PM I'm new to this board so go easy on me. Got a real quick question.
I'm wondering if anyone has an idea on what it would take to put an engine mounted air compressor on a Powerstroke? I'm thinking that IH has to have one, any T444E rigs have air brakes? I haven't had time to do any digging to find out myself yet.
CumminsBronco 11-03-2003, 04:53 PM doesn't answer your question exactly, but I know some of the PSD's came with dual alternators. That might mean that if you have a single alt setup that at least you have room to mount an air comp. I would think that one of the Sanborn (sp) style comps would fit nicely in an alt. space.
I was lucky and found a Holset for my 4B Cummins in my 72 Bronco. Good luck with it, and, where there's a will there's a way.
jaluhn 11-04-2003, 09:44 AM I'm sure the t444e does have a provision for a compressor, but it's probably gear driven, and would require a diffent front cover and probably some other mods. You should be able to shoehorn one in there, though. I'm working on installing a air brake truck type compressor on my 6.9, and the psd isn't that much diffent. It looks like I will have to make some signifigant mods to the mountings, but it shouldn't be too hard.

Stangrcr1 11-08-2003, 05:52 AM There are several companies that make aftermarket engine driven air compressors for the T444E/Powerstroke since the factory doesn't have the option, at least none I have seen so far.
HERE (http://www.mobileairsystems.com/common.php?v_section=6&v_page=1) is one with some good pics.
Ingersoll Rand makes one that flows 1000cfm. it is a bit pricey but it is the ultimate.
Most people I have seen have mounted Viair or other electric driven compressors to the framerails on the SD's. I do have a tiny York style compressor that I was going to try to mount where the second alternator would go. Still debating if I really want to try it.

Umm..... I think not. 1000 cfm? You're taliing industrail high flow there. As in, it would probably take the entire power output of the psd to spin it, and it would probably have to be geared down a bit, even then. Even 100 cfm is pretty big. 10 is pretty much a standard shop unit, and even the big industrail shop compressors are only 30-50 cfm.

Stangrcr1 11-15-2003, 08:08 AM Ok, maybe it was 100cfm(must be seeing things) All I remember is it was the most I had ever seen for an engine mounted underhood compressor. I do remember it cost like $4000. I have spent the last couple hours looking for it on the IR website and can't find it.
phr0gpil0t 11-19-2003, 10:18 PM I am new to this forum, and have been very much impressed with the information available.
Anyways, I have a 2002 Ford Superduty and I have been trying to mount an Air Compressor for some time on my 7.3 Litre Diesel. I think I have a solution but I havent had the time to mount the compressor.
I picked up a 94-97 powerstroke A/C compressor mount. The 94-97 Compressor mount will go in the place of my current alternator mount. I will then move my single alternator to the lower position on the engine (passsenger side). To adapt the York compressor I will take a 3/8 inch plate and mount the compressor to the plate, and finally to the 94-97 A/C compressor mount. I havent found the pulley, but I do have a picture of the pulley I need (Navistar part number 1818128C2-Tecumseh/CCI or carquest? part number 274436). Currently, all fullsize and medium duty diesel trucks us a York/Tecumseh style compressor. The compressor to get is the ER210 which moves 10.3 cfm at a some specified rpm which I cant recall. CCI is the company which is the current supplier. Furthermore you will need to experiment with the belt length.
If you want to go brain dead and pay somebody to do it for you. Go to your local Muncie PTO dealer. Ask for a hydraulic clutchpack mount. Muncie makes a mount that is used for their hydraulic clutch packs. It is very pricey (850.00 USD) but could be used to mount a york style compressor.
I hope this helps.

Stangrcr1 11-22-2003, 07:44 AM Thanks Lotek, thats the one I was thinking of. Don't know why I thought it was Ingersoll Rand.
Mad Mel 06-10-2006, 09:23 AM The 3400 IHC chassis that we have a fleet of use a two cylinder compressor mounted on the drivers side of our T444E's via a massive cast iron bracket. Everything runs off a single 8 rib serentine. Just go to your local medium to heavy duty wrecking yard to find a compressor and bracket and see if they will fit. The IHC uses all heavier components (bigger power steering pump, 200A Leese Neville alternator...) so it might be tight fit at the 3400's have a flip forward hood so no space issues like a p-up.
Ours don't use air brakes but have load leveling air suspension and air park brake.
