: Headlights don't work after wash? 69 fj-40
weigellj 10-01-2001, 09:23 AM Recently acquired a 69 cruiser about 1 week ago. Headlights, flashers/blinkers all worked when I got it. I took the top/doors off and washed out the interior/inside of the tub, under the hood. Now the headlights will not come on, the red lights for the signals come on when I pull the headlight switch all the way out. Hazards/Flashers sound like they are working, but they don't blink. What did I get wet? The fuses all look fine? Possible relay? Thanks.
weigellj 10-01-2001, 02:23 PM Someone? Anyone?
Shawn 10-01-2001, 02:27 PM I now this may sound silly but does the heater, and the wipers work?
Your gauge cluster is grounded the the body and some times doesn't always ground. This has happened to me and I just smack the gauge cluster and everything comes back on.
Now I have a ground wire going form the cluster the the body.
Maybe this will help.
Macgyver 10-01-2001, 03:29 PM sounds like you got your wiring harness wet somewhere, trouble is, there is no easy way to find it, break out the test light or multimeter and get to work!
rabid 10-01-2001, 03:36 PM There are two front end wiring junction strips inside the engine bay, look near the bib at the front of each fender. Should have around 6 or 9 junctions. Check for that strap to have been broken, loose or rusty, lost all headlights/directionals on mine and that was the culprit. You can get universal ones thru almost any parts stores- a friend of mine even put in some waterproof ones out of a mack truck.
And remember Dielectric Grease is your friend.
For the record- I dunno if I would tell these guys that you are WASHING your cruiser...
rabid 10-01-2001, 03:39 PM Bu the way- your directional issue sounds pretty typical if even one of your front directionals are out, none will work, but the relay will. Don't know why- mine does this anyways. Well, after the tire grabbed the front signal wires and ripped them out...
weigellj 10-03-2001, 07:08 AM Thanks for the info, I will check into it tonite. Everything did work before and the Wipers, dashlights all work now.... Basically the only reason I did wash the beast was to put the roll on bedliner in the tub and paint the beast. Used to be white (Painted with a brush), but I can't stand white on a vehicle... Just acquired it last week. Just trying to weigelize it. I'll let you know what I find... Later
Does your FJ have the dimmer switch in the floor? Maybe water or paint got into there. On my 71 I had trouble with that. Also check the fuse pannel. Clean the contacts with some emery paper and put in all new fuses. The contacts are steel an may have rusted.
weigellj 10-09-2001, 06:13 AM Thanks for all the advice... I guess after letting it sit the lil electrical fairies decided enough was enough... I was showing the cruiser to a buddie of mine and I pulled the HL switch to show him and everything worked again. Got me... I am still going to clean the fuse contacts, but they are all now working. Thanks.
Macgyver 10-09-2001, 07:00 AM next time that happens, start piece by piece and spray with ether. i would start with the dimmer switch and fuse block. my '69 has occasional headlight problems but i haven't torn into it yet.
joshfj40 10-09-2001, 07:41 PM ya washig the underhood of a cruiser is bad. I washed my motor once when I still had the 2f. and had and got a vacum leak I couldnt find for about a month. When dirt finally clogged it back up again. after I pulled the motor I realized there was a crack in my intake manifold. I'm gueesing it was the culprit.
Get Back to me..I PMed you.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
