I am looking at a 1991 FJ80 Landcruiser. It has 171k miles, custom bumpers 9k warn winch, and seems to be in good shape. They are asking $12,900 but I was thinking around $10k would be fair. The only problem I see is the 4.0 I6 is way underpowered. What options are there for engine swaps? If I could resonably stick a vortec v8 in there it would be a sweet rig. Are there SBC to FJ80 tranny adapters? I'd appreciate any info.

I have a 94 fzj80 and love it.
In 93 they put the better engine in it and it is a LOT better.
They do cost more but good deals can be found.
93 and 94 came with the newer engine and the older tranny. I think the 95 and ups had a weaker tranny.

There is such an adapter. Ask Jeff Jones about it sometime as I know he has an opinion <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">. I would see if you can get the rig for $8K, especially with 171K miles on it.

what a about a chevy diesel, there is a company in Australia called Marks adapters that make a large range of engine swaps. I am pretty sure they sell to the US

There are a few options on engine swaps. Marks adapter for a wide range of engines like Rhino says.

Also, you can pick up a used 1FZE and jam it in there for $2000.

I got one when I threw a rod in my '96. Bought it from a low-milage Japanese engine place.

I agree with the above. $8000 is about max i would pay for this unit. Look around, the ones with the good engine (1FZE) and factory locker with rear disc brakes are going for $14000 and up.
