You either have a T4 or a T176.

These transmission were manufactured by Borg-Warner and they often say Ford on the top cover. The case is aluminum and the casting numbers on the drivers side are 13-51 for the T-4. http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/trans/t4.html

The T-176, T-177, and T-178 are medium duty Ford transmissions manufactured by Tremec in Mexico. They have an aluminum case with the casting number 2604203. http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/trans/t176.html

The quickest way to tell a CJ 4speed in the 80s is that the T176 has one boot for the Tranny and Tcase. The SR4/T4 use 2 seperat boots one for tranny one for Tcase.
