: D300 output shaft
Mechanos 11-07-2003, 09:41 AM It truely is a sickness... I am finally close to rolling the pile out of the garage and I go and order a 4:1 kit for my D300. :flipoff2: Should be here early next week.:D Anyway, now I'm wondering about the output shaft. Is anyone running a 4:1 kit in a D300 with the stock output shaft? Any problems? Is putting the 4:1 kit in without the output shaft upgrade just a complete waste of time? I'd like to hear some opinions as well as actual facts from people with this setup. Bring it on!!!
Bones 11-07-2003, 09:56 AM Yer worse than me! :flipoff2: Atlas' are cooler though
Are you going to run it as is for a couple runs or do the tcase right away?
Mechanos 11-07-2003, 10:03 AM I'm itchin' to wheel so I'll run the stock ratio at first.... Then I'll spend a Saturday sometime and slap the 4:1 in.

RustoleumWhite 11-07-2003, 10:52 AM from my understanding of the output... you can pretty much add it at any time... if you start busting stock outputs, you can buy the output kit and just yank the output out and R&R with out yanking and ripping apart the whole case...
but I'll know for sure here in a couple weeks fi/when I get around to instauling mine...

Sorry to bust your bubble, Rusty. But it's not quite that simple. You have to remove the intermediate shaft and gear in order to get to the output. I rebuilt my D300 last year and there ain't no way I can think of that you could remove the input shaft with the t-case still mounted to the tranny. It's a "do it on the bench" job.
troutbum 11-07-2003, 01:26 PM I always get nailed with the "why do it twice" approach I am 5.3:1 in the tcases and I am nervous when I get on it...so I bought front and rear 32 spliners for the d300 that are going in this month. I fnothing else I wont be afraid to romp on it :flipoff2:

2 years now on spooled 60's & 42's and a waaaaaaay heavy Scout. The stock output is holding fine:cool: .
I do have the beefy shaft (still in box) just in case.:D
slipscomb 11-09-2003, 12:06 AM Are you removing the output or the input shaft? The output should be just 6 bolts holding the housing on. Simple replacement but the input is just the "bull gear" and "collar" which does require pulling the t-case. As far as output shafts, it all depends on what tranny (auto or manual), tire size and how you drive. I've seen alot of output shaft as well as my own slinter into pieces but mostly with "abusive" driving techniques. Manual trannies will splinter shafts alot easier than autos and tire size accounts for much of this. It seems in my experience that the 20's/300's have a hard time holding up above 38" tires in a Scout.
Mechanos 11-09-2003, 09:07 AM Have you ever taken a Scout D300 apart? Trust me.... there is no way you can take the output shaft out without dropping the t-case. The output shaft comes out through the front of the case.... through the big hole that the bull gear goes into. The only way you're going to get it out with the case still mounted is if it's already in pieces. But even then, you can't put the new one in without dropping the case.
The D300 differs from the D20. The D20's gears slide back and forth on the output shafts to engage or disengage. In the D300, the gears stay in constant mesh at all times and there are two sliding shift collars that engage and disengage the various range gears to the output shafts.
Here's the inards of the 300:
