das_jeepinator 11-07-2003, 08:59 AM For those of you that do hunt. What are your reasons for doing so?
I myself hunt, for the sport, getting away from everyone. Yes I do take someone with me safety purposes but they are hunting as well and never any closer than 400-500 yards during deer season. whether it be with bow or shotgun. no hi-power rifles are allowed to be used for deer hunting in Indiana. That is one thing I miss about Arkansas hi-power deer hunting.
Anyhow I enjoy hunting/fishing if if they are biting I can't sit still in one spot long enough to fish for very long. But hunting on the other hand I'm hanging on the side of a tree in my deer stand so I'm pretty much stuck in one spot and I can sit still then.
Since before I was born wow now 30 years ago. I was destined to become some kind of Fisherman/Hunter Which is the family business. So I've been around fishing poles and guns all my life as well as knives. I enjoy hunting because of the non-threatening,quiet,relaxing. Time I get I'm outdoors away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Enjoying the enivronment/ wildlife that surrounds where I hunt.
Let's hear your reasons for or against hunting/fishing maybe some borderline people will make a decision based off this thread and try on or the other maybe even both and find the same enjoyment out of these sports as most of us do:)
Bobzooki 11-07-2003, 09:01 AM Nothing like being up to your elbows in a dead elk...
OK, I do it because I like to eat it. :shaking:
Chemical442 11-07-2003, 09:34 AM I only have the time for Shotgun Deer Season this year. Our first season is November 13-16 and Second Season is December 4-7.
Here's my last years harvest:
The Joker 11-07-2003, 09:53 AM I hunt to get out with family that doesnt wheel. Its a nice get away time with the men of the family and friends. Mostly just a waste of money for me I have yet to shoot anything. I have gone deer, elk, turkey and boar hunting without any success yet. Usually see the wrong game when I am out.
I will keep going though. Its different than biking, hiking and wheeling in that you go to the woods and sit and listen to the woods a lot more peaceful to just sit and listen.
das_jeepinator 11-07-2003, 09:54 AM nice buck there chem .
I do eat what I hunt and we have a program with local hunters around family business that if they harvest more deer than they have room for in their freezer the needy people of the county get the deer for the price of processing.
If the pic will load heres a couple of my deer and some other stuff at the family business.
:( file is too big new computer and I'm not sure how to resize it if anyone wants I'll send the pics to you , resize them and either send them back to me or post up I'll share mine as well:D
rusted 11-07-2003, 10:00 AM I hunt because my entire extended family does it. Well, there are a couple of pussy-types, accountants and beauracrats, that don't, but we don't count them as family.
I actually like small-game hunting better than deer, for the reasons you said Das. Can't sit still. I *can*, have gotten a few deer, but don't REALLY like it. Western hunting is extremely easy because you walk around some, sit some, etc. That's nice. And the deer are always hundreds of yards away. Scratch all I said for elk archers. But in northern MI, the woods are so close by the time the deer is there, you have to be quiet as fawk, can't move, breathe, trying to stopping pulsing with your heartbeat...
MI has deer like Chem's in the South, where it's all shotgun hunting and bow. But the biggest buck I've ever harvested is a spike. All good eating deer. I've had a shot at a small 8 point, but I figure unless it's a great rack, I'm sticking to the stuff I can eat without tanning it first. :)
Insayn 11-07-2003, 10:05 AM I hunt for food and to get away from the stresses at work. I enjoy the silence, the outdoors and eat what I take. I just ate some sausage from this Black Russian boar this morning.

:flipoff2:
The Joker 11-07-2003, 10:14 AM That is a big boar way to go.
Franklin 11-07-2003, 10:19 AM I do it to get away from everyone and everything. I kill only what I plan on eating or giving away. Management of deer herds are critical to their success because man has removed ALL natural predators in most areas. We only shoot 8pt and above and any doe you can see plus any bucks with fucked up antlers. Trying to maintain the 1:1 buck to doe ratio is critical to the management philosophy. We plant game plots, friut trees and fertilize natural browse areas.
It isnt about the killing of the animal but the management of the overall herd in my area that I care about. Now if I could only get the buck toothed rednecks to stop shooting the damn spikes I will have actually done something.
MossMan 11-07-2003, 10:22 AM I just like to be in the woods, by myself, alone, in the quiet.:D Seriously, probably one of the best stress relievers I've ever known. I don't even really care if I kill anything. I just like to be out there.

I enjoy all aspects of hunting and have a great respect for my adversary.
SilverZuk 11-07-2003, 10:27 AM I have hunted/been around hunting and shooting all my life. I got my first shotgun at age 7. It was a 410. Every year for Christmas I get a gun/bow/tree stand/equipment/etc. It is one hobby I always do. Others come and go, but hunting is always there.
Everything from squirrel, rabbit, grouse, deer, turkey, crow, ground hog, coyote and others. If there is a season for it, I probably hunt it.
Except bears, I have no desire ever to kill a bear. They are quite plentiful in my area, but after having several friends shoot a bear, I could care less if I ever shoot one. It’s like shooting a 250 pound raccoon. The meat is not very good quality, you can cook it so it tastes ok. Your yard stinks every warm day up through march where you cleaned it, and it takes a couple of weeks to wear the smell out of your boots and out from under your fingernails.
My new favorite is hunting with a black powder shotgun. I’ve killed turkey and squirrel so far. It’s a ton of fun. My all time favorite is rabbit and grouse hunting. I deer hunt quite a bit, but don’t get much of a thrill killing them anymore. After you kill 60 or so, it all seems the same. I view it as a required duty to put 3 to 5 in the freezer each season.
The biggest thrill I get is taking people hunting and teaching them the laws of the land. I would much rather take someone deer hunting and let them shoot the deer, than do it myself.
Crow hunting is another type of hunting I love. We decoy them just like ducks, but the action is almost always hot. Lots of shooting and lots of smiles.
Grouse hunting (without a dog) is probably the hardest. We walk for miles over un even terrain in the harshest winter conditions. It’s physically demanding and requires the most skill to go from walking and talking to shooting when a grouse flushes and you only have about 1 to 2 seconds to acquire the target and shoot. When I am at the top of my game, I bat about 50%.
I eat what I kill except for the varmits (crows, ground hog, and coyote). I am currently learning to tan hides. I have my first two about complete and they look like crap. Looks like I need alot more practice.

Is that deer in the hospital?!? I hope it wasn't for a bullet wound.
ToyMot0 11-07-2003, 11:04 AM Nope, it was actually found by a farmer tangled in a barb wire fence with it's neck broken. They took it to the Vet at A&M.
I hope it made it:(
Insayn 11-07-2003, 11:11 AM That deer had a broken neck from getting tangled in a fence. That thing is a monster.

Where I was hunting at we were not allowed to shoot a buck unless the antlers were outside the ears and 8 points or above unless it was a cull buck. We also had to choose the more mature deer. We were required to cut out the lower jaw bone and turn it in to be examined by a wildlife scientist (PITA), but that is apart of game management. The ferel hogs and Russian boars were a nuicance to ranchers and farmers because they tear up everything so we could shoot as many as we wanted. I have seen them in packs well over 30+. The coyote population was enormous and needed to be brought down in order to maintain a good deer and turkey population. I always get chills while sitting out in the open in the morning as the sun crests the horizon. Then all the sudden coyotes start yelping and howling all over the place.
PTSchram 11-07-2003, 11:15 AM I love to hunt, but the current job and the new wife aren't amenable to it.
I used to hunt every morning from September first when dove season opened up until January 15th. Dove early, duck on my birthday as the early season usually opens on that day, then bow deer (until my dad sold my bow), then muzzleloader deer in Indiana, then around thanksgiving, Deer in the UP with high-powered rifle (you poor trolls, stuck with shotguns), then goose until January.
Someday, maybe I'll be able to get back to it. As for why I do it, I can't even begin to explain it.
Liftedassdodge 11-07-2003, 11:29 AM i never been into hunting, but i totaled 2 cars from hitting deer

Toyota_Jim 11-07-2003, 01:54 PM I used to do alot of coon hunting, and squrril.
Used to hunt rabbits witha bow alot.
Now i just fill my tags and keep the meat, got one 17 pointer i had mounted.
usually spend only 15-20 minutes in the woods hunting
Im in the woods every day, see deer and other animals, know their habits.
jds4x43 11-07-2003, 05:54 PM I hunt about anything, with the exception of geese and ducks. I've deer hunted every year since I was about 8, squirrel hunted since I was a kid and started turkey hunting at 9. Like a lot of others have said here I eat what I kill with the exception of the nuisance animals (coyotes, opossums, crows, and badgers). I love being in the timber and the quiet peaceful feeling of it all. Hunting and shooting were just a part of growing up on a farm.
John
Jeepskickass 11-07-2003, 07:36 PM I like to be one with nature, to be a part of the food chain rather than an observer. There is nothing more satisfying than a day in the forest, whether I fill my tag or not.
Fawk, who am I kidding? I do it because I like to kill things.
81_4xToy 11-07-2003, 07:37 PM I have hunted/fished all my life. I was kinda born into it. My dad was a taxadermist, and we grew up in the boat or the deer blind. The killer thing about hunting is getting away from all the fawking people, traffic, cell phones, etc. Got into bow hunting last year. That is a fawking blast!!!!!! Twenty yards is a whole new ball game, especially since Texas hunting is usually in a blind within a hundred or so yards from a feeder. My real passion is varmint hunting. Blowing a coyote up at 150 yds. is the shit. I also do some trapping, but it's not real big here in the south. Got a bobcat last year and could only get $25.00 for him, but didn't have to skin 'em. (22lbs, kinda small)
