: Did International use Dana 44???
MonsterGM 11-09-2003, 03:17 PM The local boneyard has 2 or 3 old Internationals. Not sure what models they are, but they all appear to have a solid front axle with the differential on the passengers side. The passenger-side differential will require me to change the transfer-case on my S-10, but the axle width seems to be about what I'm looking for. Does anyone know what types of Internationals used a Dana 44 front axle? A Dana 30 will not be enough for the scale that I'm building this truck.

61scout80 11-09-2003, 04:31 PM please search, this topic is covered everyday in this forum, usually by someone who doesn't drive an IH, since we all know enough to search. if you scroll down the page i'm sure you will see 3 or 4 threads that actually say dana 44 in the title, its really not that complex man, look before you post.

Ben Segrest 11-09-2003, 06:47 PM Okay, I'll help you out (since everyone else is being a dick). If it's got 10 bolts holding the diff cover on it's exactly that. An IH 10 bolt. It is a marginal axle at best. Comparable to a d30 strengthwise. There is a lot of info on this axle over on the Binderbulletin. It would be a much better idea to swap in, say, a d44 out of a wagoneer/early cherokee. It'll be about the width you want. Good luck. Ben
Rockabilly 11-10-2003, 03:33 AM So, what your telling us is you can't ID a D44 and aren't really sure what a solid axle is?http://www.binderbulletin.org/faq/1.htm#7
RustoleumWhite 11-10-2003, 10:50 AM Scouts or Pick-Up/Travelall (looks like a suburban)
If IH "Full-Size", yes, D44 front. All be is all but three years (last three of the full sizes) are closed knuckle/Drum. And only two of those three are disc.
If Scout.. could be D27, D30, D30 open knuckle, D44. Really need to know what "the old Internationals" are.
Short answer: yes. What width and bolt pattern you looking for for your S-10?? That may help find a good axle canidite for you.
tbriley 11-10-2003, 08:23 PM Step 1. Delete this post.
Step 2. Get yourself an early-Bronco, disc-brake front axle.
Step 3. Don't come back without doing some RESEARCH !
Have a nice day and thank you for visiting the PBB IH Forum.

I often hear of open knuckle, and closed knuckle. Can anyone explain the difference??? Does that refer to the "steering knuckle" as in the part that swivles on ball-joints or a king-pin, or does it refer to the "knuckle yoke", which is essentially part of the axlehousing??? Sully 11-12-2003, 09:07 AM Here's a novel idea:
Take a look at the fawkin axle! If you can't ID a D44, then you shouldn't be doing a swap.

TravisSSII 11-12-2003, 12:15 PM I have a two d44's on my '77 SSII. I like 'em.
Did that help :flipoff2:

I have two Dana 44 axles that I'll be using for a project truck. The trouble is with the bolt-circle patterns. The front axle came off an early Ford Bronco, and has a 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern. The rear axle came off a Jeep Comanchee, and it has a small 5 on 4.5" pattern. I know that custom axleshafts can probably be made to get a 5 on 5.5" pattern in the rear, but that still leaves the brakes to deal with. Does anyone know of any Dana 44 rear axle that ever used a 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern??? If such a pattern was ever used, I would probably just get the axleshafts made, and then simply bolt on the brakes....
This came from here.....
Obviously he's gotten it figured out by now.....since he wrote that yesterday....
