Millermatic 251 vs 210

I'm buying a new welder pretty soon. I've got 2,000 to work with. I'm pretty set on a high end MIG set up. I probably won't be doing anything more than 1/4 steel but I like to have extra power to spare.

I like the looks of the 251 and like the trick looking digital readouts and my bro in law says go for the 251 for the gun on demand feature but I'm not up for welding aluminum off a second gun.

The other option is the 210. There seems to be nothing fancy about this rig but the controls seem very obviously laid out.

I'm leaning toward the 251 only because it looks like a cadillac of welders. Sooo, help me out. Thanks in advance!

The 210 is spool gun ready as well. Get the 210 and spool gun, large tank, extra consumables, a few rolls of wire, new helmet , leathers and you will be out of cash!

We just got a new 210 and that thing is sweet. Get the spool gun set up for alum with another tank and you are good to go.

Yep.

Shouldn't be a problem eating up that 2k with a 210 and supplies.

Esp if you go with a couple different mixes ;)

I've got the 210 and have been very happy with it.

Actually spent 1-2 HOURS non stop welding 1/4" plate with it. It never overheated, although the gun gets pretty warm and mechanix gloves do start to smoke from all the heat.

(too bad no one makes welding gloves like mechanix gloves)

Yes or No? 210 and spend the extra money on supplies. The 251 has more bling that you will probably never need IMHO.

then buy a used mm200. More power, less $$$ and maybe you'll get one with the funky cool switchboard style plugins ;)

I got my MM210 for 1145. If you wait for "the deal" you get a free welding helmet (a good one).

I got the free cover, which is pretty much worthless cause I weld 7 days a week and never cover it ;)

Sometimes they also come out with the free spool gun deal.

I got my 210, with the alum. spool gun for about $1185.

Been looking at the cover, want to sell it?

I got in on the spool gun deal as well.

Well, I've already got a argon/co2 bottle and the helmet, (not a blinker) and the welding jacket etc. I don't care to mess with aluminum so whatever I spend the cash on will be all welder. Is there anything out there worth looking at for up to 1/4 welding besides the 210 or 251?

So far I'm sold on the 210/251 but miller isn't offering the helmet deal now. Of course they would end the freebies just as I'm ready to buy.

Esab any good? I've only heard good stuff about them but everyone seems to say Miller is the cadillac.

I don't know anything about any of them really. I've only welded with a Lincoln 225 AC and a little 115 mig setup. This will be my first REAL welder.

They say Miller is the cadillac because it IS the cadillac, and for guys like us I'd say the 210 is the shit. I've got one as well and LOVE it. I'd also say that Miller is way underrated as far as power. 1/2in in a single pass is nothing. It can easily do thicker. Also, having used a 251, I also think the 210 is easier to weld with. You may not give a shit but a lot of NASCAR teams use the 210 to build their junk.

I have a 250x and the 30a spoolmatic. This welder has by far exceeded my needs. What I like, the spool gun is connected to the welder along with the argon bottle. The spoolgun has its own regulator and air hose. I can be welding steel (normal) then pick up the gun and trigger it and the indicators on the front of the welder switch over to the spoolgun settings (volt, speed) and the spoolguns speed is adjustable at the gun. I will admit welding less than 1/8" allum. takes patience. And it will never weld like a TIG. So dont expect the welds on thin allum to be easy.

Have you considered the Lincoln 255?

Priced similiar to the Miller 251, the lincoln comes with a much stronger/beefier driveroll setup..

Other than that both machines kickass I`ve used both....

Goto your local welding shop and talk to them there about the two, and they probably will let you demo pretty much anything they have.

When I was picking up some more wire I was talking to the guy about the Lincoln 255 and he even brought up the lincoln driveroll "strength" over the Miller... and yes the miller does jam on occasion..

On the rare (he he) occasion you weld the tip shut, and dont realize it and keep going (try to atleast) the miller gets all jumbled up, and sometimes screws up in the drive roll.. where my lincoln ive welded the tip up and it just pushes until it pops off or if i hit it on the ground the weld comes off and like 6" of wire comes out... i haven't had the wire get jumbled yet.. but then again I rarely weld the tip shut...

This was my first weld with the Lincoln 255... testing out the settings... I`m no pro at welding and am still learning..

This is 5/16" Plate

(note spatter was from another weld done by my smaller 90amp fluxcore unit - )

Sounds more like a wire tension setting problem rather than a drive roll problem. I lean towards more tension than less. Never had the problem you speak of. My 035 wire will push on through if I get chit stuck in the nozzle.

If you only want to do 1/4" on a regular basis, the mm210 would be way more than you'll ever need.
Maybe consider the mm175?
I have a mm251 and could burn 1/2" all day with no problems.(however with accesories It was around $2300 out the door):flipoff2:
