: Finally found a 44, in an unlikley place
MonsterGM 11-10-2003, 06:51 PM I went to the boneyard today and had another look at the '67 Bronco I saw. Acording to the pictures given by EBSteve, the front axle is clearly a Dana 44. The original axle must have been swapped out at one point in time, or possibly the boneyard wrote the wrong year on the truck. Either way, I am convinced I have finally found a Dana 44 to rebuild. Hopefully I can get some time off from work within the next few days to extract the axle from the truck. I started on it today, but the bolt securing the track-bar to the frame was seized up. No amount of hammering would free it. I am currently recharging the batterires in my sawzall, and will simply cut the track-bar to free the axle. I only hope to god that nobody else tries and grabs the axle, or that the junkyard decides to crush the truck. Thanks goes out to EBsteve for the pictures (they helped alot!!!), to cumminsBronco for offering an axle, and to everyone else who provided information. For some reason, it is only the Jeep and the International groups that have an attitude problem...
Thanks again for the help!!!
CumminsBronco 11-10-2003, 08:03 PM I never could understand that "jeep thang", whatever it is the decal says.
welndmn 11-11-2003, 07:55 AM Where is the bronco, I want to buy the whole thing :D
EBSTEVE 11-11-2003, 11:21 AM It's in Mexico city (well that's the story untill he has the parts anyway)
Take the track bar off of at the frame end. I am telling you it's easy to stuff the coils in and they work great. I am just curious of how much you are taking and how much they are charging you. Also check out the www.broncofix.com BB for some info on the disc break swap. There are many options from all Ford parts to Chevy parts or a combo with Scout parts.
MonsterGM 11-14-2003, 05:21 PM I plan on taking only the front axle. They will likley charge about $60 or $70 for it. It may sound crazy, but this axle will be going under a GMC Jimmy (S-10 size). I plan to use leaf-springs for simplicity, but I think coils would be awsome. I would plan on coils, but the addition of bars and links does not inspire much confidence.
rmyers2051 11-14-2003, 08:52 PM Use the coils! You already have the upper buckets, get the arms and mounts from the EB you are dessimating, it is much easier than a leaf swap. steering will be so much easier with coils.

What do you mean I already have the buckets? Do you mean the ones off the Bronco??? Either way, I still think leafs would be easier. The only reason is because I plan on adding a lot of lift. Around 8" or so. Stock radius arms and track bar could not be used unless all mounting points were dropped considerably. Plus, instead of just spring mounts to deal with, the coils would add the hassle and uncertainty of fabbing radius-arm mounts and a track-bar mount....

he must of thought you had a ranger.
leaves will work real well in this situation, though a fullsize swap may have been better for that application.
crackhead93 11-16-2003, 10:10 AM if this ford axle is going in a chebby, how are you getting around the opposite side diff drops (driver vs pass side) ??? dumb question, but just asking...
Brian...

The axle is going in an S-10, which has the differential on the drivers-side, just like the early Bronco. Actually, all newer 4x4 GM trucks have a drivers-side diff. The GM passenger-side diff was phased out with the death of GM's very last SFA truck; the fullsize Blazer in 1991 or '92....

the reason they weren't to friendly with you is, one, you didnt search, two you asked a question if the international harvesters used a d44, and there had to have been 5 post on that page reffering to the d44 int eh international harvester. Basicly they called you lazy, blind, and stupid.
that and if there gonna charge yah 70 some bucks for a dana 44 in a EB, then the junkyard guys are morons also.
4dr4x4blaze 12-06-2003, 12:30 AM k i have a solid axle 91 s10 blazer. i went with leafs. i used a waggy front axle. the steering couldnt have been easier. i just did crossover and no bind or clearance issues whatsoever. go with leafs. mine ramps about 1000 with crappy cherokee leafs in the front and 63 inch chevvys in the rear.

demonranger 12-08-2003, 07:25 AM coils aren't hard to put on.. worst case... you get buckets and radius arm mounts off the bronco in the bone yard and thenyou have all you need to make it work and your set. bolt/weld on the buckets to the frame and then the axle will hang where you located it and then attach the radius arm mounts in the back to make it work. then the steering you can snag off the bronco will work almost bolt on
