: Radiator (another I know)
TravisSSII 11-12-2003, 12:56 PM OK, I know you have talked about radiators before. I searched and did not find what I wanted. ( rushed search, because I am in a ME lab on campus)
I know I can fab up any radiator into my '77 SSII 345 but I don't want to work that hard, or take the time.
I need a very good radiator to put in without spending $500 on a new scout II radiator.
I have to be up and going by early Jan.
I don't have much time because of UT engineering and work.
Mechanos 11-12-2003, 01:32 PM Got a radiator in it now? If so, just take it down to a radiator shop and have it recored. I had a stock 2 row recored with a 3 row core for $250. They didn't have the core in stock so they had to build one for it so it took 1 day instead of 1/2 day to get it done.
TxScout 11-12-2003, 02:14 PM $500 for a new scout radiater? Hell that's more than some scouts go for. I think you're looking in the wrong places. Does Bob have any more v8 radiators lying around? Call him first. Then check out some scout vendors, like BCB
# Radiators new: Available for Scout 2 and Traveler. These are brand new replacements with all new parts. hp has more fins and tubes per inch, where Triple flow divert water through radiator 3 times before exiting. These two are for towing, desert, race, and hard core trail conditions.
# Note that our new radiators are in most cases cheaper than a recore at a local shop. Bad thing about a recore is they still use the old tanks, and some parts. Thoes will wear out not long after a recore due to existing age. Our prices are the lowest in the country that we know of. Find one cheaper let us know and we will try and meet that price with verification provided.
3 core $299.00
3 core hp $325.00
4 core: $350.00
4core hp: $375.00
4 core triple flow: $400.00
TravisSSII 11-12-2003, 03:22 PM sweet..... 3 core hp looks nice.
BEN C. 11-12-2003, 05:52 PM I got a brand new 4 core for $335 including shipping from Hughs Factory Direct.

Hughes has a horseshit warranty. Fawk them!!
Rockabilly 11-13-2003, 07:04 AM did you check out summit? I'm running a sumit universal and it keeps the rig cool.
RustoleumWhite 11-13-2003, 08:36 AM My personal opinion is avoid the 4-cores.
take your current rad to a rad shop and get an estimite, or hit the bone yards/classifieds and get a "good used" for cheap.
or bone up for a new one.

Radiators come with warranties?
My 3-row high-eff was $250 from Hughes.
ChiScouter 11-13-2003, 10:22 AM I bought a 4 row from Hughes, the tanks were not SII and they soldered on a BS elbow made from soldering 2 pieces of tubing cut at 45 degree angles on the bottom port. It started leaking a few weeks after I bought it. One of the tanks started weeping on both sides. Numerous little oozing pinholes. I threw some sealer in, but more leaks showed up. I called them up and they wanted me to ship it back for repair. I was using it as my DD, and there was no way I could send the rad back and have the rig down. I told them this and offered to send them pics of the problem. They offered me up to 35 bucks to have it repaired at a shop. When I asked them to send me a replacment that they could verify as pressure tested and I would send mine back upon reciept they didn't want to talk to me anymore.
That radiator never cooled as well as the 3 row that proceded it.
I never took the time to take the rad off and resolder it, but several times I flushed it out and tried every product on the market to seal the seams without success. As time went by both tanks weeped in numerous places. I even tried caps with weaker springs and only having the cap tightened to the 1st detent. The core never leaked, only the seams.
That fawker was a POS, and they didn't stand behind it.
BEN C. 11-13-2003, 07:38 PM Hmmmmm, mine looks just like the OE and I havent had any trouble with it- - - - yet.
The Fleckster 11-16-2003, 11:29 PM Thanks TXScout
Yea i would say the one i like best is the 3 core or the 3 core HP. I got the 4-core hp in my traveler and i think it cools too good as the temp stays at 165 with the autometer guage. Its a 180 t-stat so beats me what the hell is going on but the heat is not as hot so it must be cooling too good. Also my fan is close for comfort to the radiator.
FYI: Order now as its usually a 2-3 week wait time tio have them assemble one.

Why would a 1977 IH 345 radiator be cheaper than say a 79??
They both would fit right?
I really don't think I will buy a radiator from these people but what is up with the prices?
Those prices suck !
Even the cheapest one is twice as much as one from Hughes?
TravisSSII 11-23-2003, 05:54 PM where would I look for Hughes online?

What does Scout Madness want for one?
Darel 11-23-2003, 08:03 PM If you care to go this route, see the thread I have about the Taurus fan as a pusher. Check the end. I bought the rad from Summit for $160, $45 to have the mount flanges fabbed, $16 for 2 1/4" tubing, and $65 to have the necks fabbed from the tubing. If you can weld aluminum, your total is $176 for a brand-new, fully welded aluminum rad. If you're a dumbass like me, even $286 is a good price. Debate all you want about aluminum vs. brass/copper but you can't deny it will flow more coolant. Whether it spends enough time in the rad to cool remains to be seen, though. Hey, ya gotta experiment.

tsm1mt 11-23-2003, 08:27 PM US Radiator (http://www.usradiator.com/tinter.htm) has IH rads, too.. maybe that's where I got mine. :D
Dunno.. ~$250 for the 3-row high-eff IIRC, and it dropped right in. :D
No real problems keeping the built 345 cool most of the time, with a fixed or clutch fan.

Ditto fer my 304 3 core hp. About the same price as well, with the SF Bay area markup $285 according to my receipt from 3 yrs ago.
