what do ya think.. ??

I have plenty of room in the cargo area of the ZJ.

instead of spending all the money on the trail head compressor from Oasis...I can:

Purchase a Power converter big enough to power a small "pancake style" AC/110 compressor that can be removable?
Then the converter will double to run many, many other things including the blender! JC Whitney has come decent deals on these.. judging by my calcs I would need at least a 2700 watt unit for 13.8 amp (110v) draw. (thats the rating on the compressor I am looking at 2HP). The only reason I am looking at this option is to have the 110V capability and to run a small welder. The Pancake compressor has good CFM ratings too..and the compressor is only 100.00$ at my local Tractor Supply CO.

I will be building an OBA Engine Driven setup for the ZJ very soon. Utilzing Kilbys compressor etc.

Its going to be bad ass :p

Why bother with the converter? Any welder good enough to stick anything together is going to use at least 50 amps at 110V. Not to mention you would make a better weld at DC than AC. The compressor may fill a tire, but it would require a huge tank to run any tools off of and it would not keep up with that. OBA setups are easy to build with junk yard parts and a couple of readily available things from the local electrical shop. http://www.coloradok5.com/york.shtml OBW can be had for a reasonable price also. A pair of optimas (or 3 ) can get you out of a lot of jams. It will put a bead down a lot better than any 110 that was limited to under 15 amps. If you look around, there are a few guys on the board that rewind a stock alternator to be capable of welding. Or spend your money on an onboard welder that is intended to do just that. These often come with other perks like increased load handling for winching and jump starting along with battery isolation. I'm not trying to rain on your parade. I have a converter in my truck to power things that I don't have adapters for. They have their place. It would suck to spend all that money and not be able to do anything that you had intended.

1972..

I know all about the welders amperages..etc. I know it may have seemed like a flamable post..! I had a York set up on my last jeep (an)XJ pre-kilby!. It worked awesome.. but I also know what a 2hp 110unit will do. CLOSE to the same... to change a tire once and a while...fill your tires and your buddies... thats what I am after..I just figured this route would enable me to have the best of both worlds...I just figured I could spend a little less and gain a converter so when the wife wants to blow dry her hair or watch TV when we are camping!

oh and APRILZ...

email me some photos of yoru setup... what year is your ZJ mine is a 97...let me know what you think.. cause it still is not out of the question for me. it is close to the same set up as the XJ I did but there are a few more things in the way on the ZJ. the AC lines...and the fuse center.. relocating the battery is no big deal..

An air driven margarita blender is blessed, but a gas drivin's devine!
I used a "weed eater", makes margaritas in less than 20 seconds.
A pancake compressor will drive a fair amount of small air tools, but the power inverter will cost almost as much as a small Coleman gererator. Terry

What about the draw of the compressor RIGHT at startup? More than you think.

CO2...Compressors are fine and dandy but not nearly as portable as my CO2. Oh and I can run any airtool you can. I carry a 20lb CO2 tank and it will run FO EVA it seems. I fill it once or twice a season. 10-15 bucks a fillup.

specialtyparts has some pretty good prices on CO2 set-ups too... they're having a big sale this weekend... the price might be even cheaper who knows...

I hate to be the one to tell you this but that is a dumb idea! You are going to have to get some batteries to power that injverter, probably 2 / 6 volt golf cart batteries, then a 2700 or 3000 watt inverter, and then a air compressor. WHY? Do you have a alternator to charge those batts back up? How much is that inverter going to cost? How about a Prosine 1800 watt for $1200. If you think one of those "2000 watt" $200 inverters is going to work, you are wrong. There is a reason people go through all of the trouble of doing a york setup, it's because it's hard to beat haveing that much air for a couple of hundred dollars. Im not trying to be a ass but, Dude think about it!

like was stated above, it ain't gonna work that easy. You would need a 200 amp alternator just to run the compressor (2700 watts/ 14 volts) probably more since the invertor isn't 100% efficient. Otherwise, it's gonna drain your battery down rather quickly. I don't know much about invertors, but one that can deliver 2700 watts continiously is going to cost a fortune, probably a lot less than figuring out how to mount a york, plus you would still need to buy the air compressor.
