Hi Everyone,
I am finishing my 350/700R4/NP203/3SPTC conversion in my 71 FJ40 and need a front drive shaft. From flange to flange it is 42". I was think of using a rear drive shaft from a FJ60. I was told the FJ60 drive shaft flange will not mate to an older FJ40 transfer case. So I was think of putting my FJ40 drive shaft flange on the FJ60 drive shaft.
Anybody done this?
TIA,
Jeff

The FJ60 flange is round you can always take the 40s Tcase flange bolt patern mark it in between the 60s holes and then you hav e a 60 flange that will fit both a 40 and a 60.;)

This is easy and should work.
The front flange on the transfer case is the same as a pinion flange. So you should be able to replace your T/C flange with a later coarse splined pinion flange with the correct driveshaft bolt pattern (1/74 through 12/77). The even later pinion flange (1/78 and later) is fine splined and won't work.
The early FJ60 (8/80 through 8/84) driveshaft flanges are rectangular with the 1/74 and later bolt patterns.
To recap:
- replace your T/C flange with a 1/74 through 12/77 pinion flange
- use an 8/80 through 8/84 FJ60 driveshaft
The only thing to double-check is the length of the FJ60 driveshaft you need, the rear driveshafts got shorter (and the front longer) somewhere in the '85 model year (?).

i did something similar and just used my flange and it slipped straight onto the slip yoke off the 60, or you could change your t-case flange liek someone elses suggested
change in driveshaft length aorund th 85 year mark, im thinking shorter rear and longer fronts = 5 speed ;)

Yes in 1985-87 the rear shaft is shorter and the front longer cause of the spacer in between the tcase and trans which in non USA models is the 5 speed
