I really want to put a locker in the rear of my FJ62, but I really don't want to spend the $$$ on the ARB. I drive the cruiser daily and I live where snow is a definite factor in the winter. Is it really dangerous driving with one of these lockers in the snow? Any helpful reccommendations are greatly appreciated.

My FJ55 was a daily driver for a year with a Powertrax No-Slip locker in the rear, no problems.

The longer the wheelbase the less you will notice. I ran one in my FZJ-80 and used it as a tow rig and I could not tell it was back there except for the ratcheting in parking lots.

Now that mine is broken in, I don't notice it anymore. The occasional tire chirp reminds me sometimes. POWERTRAX No-SLIP, Daily Driver get it.

I think he was referring to driving in snow and on black ice.
I know my old 77 fj-40 locked up on black ice a couple of times on the highway. I can honestly say that I have done more than a few 360's on ice due to a locker. Can't speak for the long wheelbase though.

I had a lock-rite in the rear of a 72 FJ40 that I drove daily for about 6mos. I did more than my fair share of "ground loops" in snowy/icey conditions. It was bad enough that I ran open for an extra year on my 74 FJ40 so I could save enough for ARB's.
Just my $0.02 - YMMV

I don't like mine in my 60. It ratchets a lot. What I don't like is when I'm going 80 mph down the interstate and let off the gas it pitches me toward the center line. And when I get back on it, I go back towards the ditch. I drive too fast this. And pulling a trailer it is almost suicidal. It is coming out before winter. On the trail it works fine. Pluses are price and ease of install.

I liked the extra traction in the snow of my locker.
Best thing I ever did.
I think it depends on your driving style.
Being way up here in the great white north I've had years of driving in the snow experience.

If you are going to be driving on packed snow and ice then it will be a little scary, your rear end is gonna want to slip out from behind you a lot,you will see this the most when going around corners. Just as long as you are real lite on the gas it will be manageable. If you are gonna see lots of deep snow then go for it you cant beat the kind of traction this will give you in deep powder

I may be a wus, but I hated my lockright in the rear when there was snow on the ground. I took it out! I did not mind it otherwise. I drove in Tahoe with sonw and ice combined with lots of curves in the road. Get an ARB. My .02

its all up to your driving style and conditions, if you learn to drive with the locker it can be easier (they like breaking axle studs) but if you arent used to it, it xcan be very dangerous especially in wet/slippery conditions, i bent a rim the day after i put my locker in!
I put one in the back of my mini a few weeks ago, just to hold me over till I can get the $$$ together for a rear electric locker (front one is done). It's great on the trail, was cheap (used, $100), and really easy to install. But I *hate* it on the road. Tosses the truck all over the place, just like LCsixy said. And my wheelbase is longer than my wagon. I'll be taking it back out before the snow starts flying, probably in a couple of weeks.
