: Need Help reading a diff tag ASAP
Po' riggity 12-16-2001, 04:56 PM I picked up my front D44 today, and I need a little help deciphering the diff tag. Here are the numbers on it:
603472 10
Does this indicate 4.10 gears? Thanks. And what do all the other numbers mean.. how does it break down?

Cheepin 12-16-2001, 08:43 PM I am no expert on axles, but on my 44's there is a tag bolted to the diff cover that says 4.10.These usually come up missing after someone does any work to the diff though.Look for this tag.Wish I could help with the numbers you gave.Blazin:rasta:
Supergper 12-16-2001, 08:44 PM I'm not sure what all the numbers mean but I THINK that it is 4.10 and the 72 between them is its from a 1972 vehicle??? Do you know what vehicle it came out of???

It did come out of a early 70's truck, 72' sounds about right. Kind of interesting, this truck had the factory hydro assist. :D The main reason Scott (1BadJeep) is asking because the matching 9" is still sitting in the truck down at this wrecking yard and if it does have factory 4.10's were going to get him the 9" for $250 bones complete :D
Ahh.... factory Ford steering assist.... bet it has been leaking all over the place too :p
Po' riggity 12-16-2001, 10:22 PM BTT anyone?? anyone?? Id like to confirm this.. there was a lot of work done to this axle.. I picked it up in GREAT shape... hehhehe.. all it needs now is a little welding rod on the spiders, and a disc brake conversion..... and some sort of decent steering setup... And its done... Im really HOPING TO GOD its 4.10.. so I dont have to regear before I put them under the heep. Oh and I hear that if the pinion is above the centerline on the ring gear, that its supposedly reverse cut. Can anyone deny or qualify this? If thats true, Im hoping to have a reverse cut ford axle 65" wide with 4.10s!:D
Scott :grinpimp:<><
Supergper 12-16-2001, 10:48 PM Well if you got this out of a Ford(sounds like you did:D)then it should be a Reverse Cut and 4.10 was a factory option for them...do the little spin the yoke count the wheel turns deal and see approx what gears it has...or quickly take off the diff cover and look for the numbers on the ring gear and that will tell you too:D good luck and hope you found what you are looking for:flipoff2:
Supergper 12-16-2001, 10:53 PM BTW Rockbuggy(not to change the subject:D) but did you ever cut your rear fenders to the Avalanche comp style??? If you did, or maybe you know, do you cut off the rear body mounts by doing this and if so do you have to replace them or can you just leave them without??? Thanks
Po' riggity 12-16-2001, 11:09 PM Supergpr,
No, he hasnt cut his fenders yet, hes too much of a pansy LOL :D :flipoff2: Just kiddin there rock taco, errr I mean buggy... my bad. It seems to me, that the way the avalanche fenders are cut, that you just BARELY keep the two rear body mounts.. but I could be wrong.. :D

Thats the same as what I am thinking/hoping but I cant find any pics good enough to see for sure:D thanks
Po' riggity 12-17-2001, 12:08 AM Here you go man.. I found a pic, and from what I can decipher, the cut just BARELY lets you keep the body mount.. if you look at the frame.. you can see that the body mount should stay right where it is.

Hope this helps.

Yea as usual you are wrong Dumbass!!! :flipoff2: No have not cut mine off yet. Still debating on extending the wheelbase. But to answer your question you do have to cut the two rear body mounts off. I've seen alot of guys just inboard them under the tailgate.

That is what I was thought because if you compare that picture that Scott posted and a picture of a Jeeps ass that hasn't been cut and the body mounts apear to be a lot farther out...thanks guys
welndmn 12-17-2001, 10:29 AM well i think*60 means something, dunno what, 3472, i am about 80% sure it means 3.72's and the 4 means LSD
Po' riggity 12-18-2001, 12:48 AM Mark,
I looked around and found ALL the available gear ratios for D44's, and 372 is not one of them. So that can't be correct, I don't think. Anyone else have a shot? Someone has to know.. Im just too lazy to go look at the ring gear.. Then again, it is almost 1 am! :)
