As soon as I get a few more parts I will be putting dana 60's in my 94 toyota. I am trying to decide on a gear ratio. I plan on running 38-39" swampers. I will be running a SM465 and an np205. I am thinking I will get 7.17 gears. I know that is little lower than usual but I don't need to go more than 55 in this truck. Any downsides to 7.17 over say 5.89?

I vote for 5.89s.
What engine will you be running?

Of course the main downside to 7.17 is the lower you go the weaker they are...I would vote for 5.89s...you can always get more reduction else where and what motor will you be running?
In my heep I ran 5.89s with stock 2.5L tranny and t-case and I felt I was almost as low as I will need to be:D

I have a mildly built 350. Do you really think I'd break 7.17 dana 60 gears in a toyota? I doubt it and I am thinking it is an easy and cheap way to reduce overall gearing. I would get a 203/205 doubler but I don't have the wheelbase for it! This truck will not see highway use.
if you want the 7.17 go for it. they are weaker but i doubt you will break them.

Id say 5.89s but why ask, you have already decided on 7.17s. Keep an extra pinion gear in your parts though, so you can make it to your trailer when you break it with the built 350 and 38s

I haven't already decided that is why I did ask, I am leaning towards 7.17 but I am not saying i'm convinced it's right. Maybe it's too low and maybe it's too weak, I am looking for more people's opinions.

I run &;17 in my big 93 on 44's...no breaks yet and it has a 700HP 454 in it.... Run what you want but I would run the 5:89's so you can keep from being "to low". I run 7:17's because the "pits" I run in can be 4-6 ft. of muck at times and 44 Boggers need all the help to "clean out".....

if you plan to drive on the street at all, even with 39.5's you will be limited to 45mph and your motor will be getting close to 3000rpm. I say 5.89, wouldnt it be nice to not have to tow all the way to the trail head? I mean with 5.89's at least you could drive it from camp to the trail at a decent pace. So go 5.89's or 42's, you have front and rear 60's might as well take FULL advantage of them

Ok, that is what I was looking for. Sounds like 7.17 might just be too low to be practicle. Thanks guys.
