: Tachometer question
Cliffy [JD] 12-16-2001, 05:30 PM Stupid questions guys..............
Is it any more difficult to hook a tach up to a points ignition than an HEI??? I've never hooked one up to a points and was wondering if there is anything *magical* about it.
Also does a standard auto zone guage set have all of the adapters to hook up to an IH engine??
And where on the engine do those guages attach for the most accurate readings???
Thanks for the info guys.
tsm1mt 12-17-2001, 09:41 AM Just hook the white wire to the + side of the coil.
Done.
More of a PITA getting the tach light to come on with the headlights.. of all my rigs, the only one that works on is the race truck, which rarely runs at night.. but I had to wire the headlights and running lights anyhow, so it wasn't a big deal to add in the gauges..
My guage packs seem to have always come with the right fittings to mount 'em up to my SV with no problem.
Cliffy [JD] 12-17-2001, 09:45 AM Ohhh the coil...DUHHH that make sense now.
REALLY  I've never had a problem getting the lights to come on with the headlights. although I can't think of how I've done it at the moment.
Anyone got some pics of (or could tell me) where to hook up the guages on my 345..........pleeeeaaaasssseee ;)

Just a matter of finding a good spot to splice into the harness.. I haven't taken the time.
Then again, the oil pressure gauge is still just lyin' on the trans tunnel cover.. that was a temporary thing when I put the new motor in 2 years ago...

Oil pressure goes on the driver's side.

(Yes, I did paint the engine after this, but I painted the senders, too, and they don't show up as clearly)
There you can see the factory sender (near the bellhousing) and in front of it, my Autometer electric sender. There's one or two more 1/8-NPT plugs between the Autometer sender and the waterpump.
For the water temp.. stock is on the passenger side of the thermostat housing.
Other good choices are any of the "heat actuated vacuum switch" things in the intake manifold. You probably don't have any vac. lines attached to 'em anyhow, so clean up the engine some and yank 'em. :D
Cliffy [JD] 12-17-2001, 11:06 AM So the two in the pic are oil press guage sending units???
I'd like to put them in a more convenient place. It looks like I'd have to yank the engine to get those in. What other options do I have???

That should be the (-) side of the coil.:flipoff2:
One warning on the oil pressure, don't use the port at the back of the engine, behind the stock sender. Depending on how old/well cared for the engine is, that last port will be partially clogged.
I ran my temp guage to the fitting in the thermostat neck, on the drivers side. On the racer, I pulled the temp off the intake. Either one will work.

What guage would I be putting on one of the "HEAT ACTUATED VACCUME PORTS" I'm
Ohhh wait.... water runs through the intake on IH's huh...is that what you mean???

Thanks for the tips :)

The stock location isn't too bad to get too, just make sure you route the line away from the exhaust....especially if it is mechanical.

Yeah mine will be mechanical, but I do plan on getting some of that better copper line to run, so that should help a bit.

Yep, one is the stock sender, the other for the Autometer.

You can get to them from under the rig pretty easily. I had the oil pres. wire get caught on the steering U-joint and had to repair it (and re-route it.. duh).
I don't think there's any other place to put 'em other than along that side.

Temp gauge. It's a coolant passage.
That should be the (-) side of the coil.
:flipoff2: If it doesn't work on the + side, try the - side.. or try RTFM. :D
There's only two options.. I usually get it right by the second try. :D
Cliffy [JD] 12-17-2001, 11:23 AM Thanks for the tips guys that'll save a lot of trial and error
This is why you guys ROCK!!!!

DEFINITELY use something better than the cheap plastic line...
I didn't think it through.. hey, it came with the gauge so...
Chalk up engine #2 to "no oil in the crankcase".. :( :(
Thus, I now run electrical oil pressure gauges in all of my rigs.
No broken plastic lines, no pulled out crimps, or anything annoying like that..
Blowing up the junkyard mill was bad 'nuff.. but I'd be beaten severely if I smoked the new motor. :D

On my racer I have an electric mounted.. in the thermostat neck, and a mechanical mounted in the intake manifold (or vice versa).. I can see the temp while it cools off w/o having the juice turned on.. and if one fails, the other is still there. :)
On the rest of my rigs I've kept the stock sender in the thermostat neck, and added mechanical temp gauges to the intake.
I haven't felt like replacing the stock gauges, and I don't like seeing dead needles, so I keep the stock senders so the stock gauges work, and add the aftermarket senders elsewhere.
Thus I can still glance at the stock gauges and see that everything is "OK''.. or if I'm concerned glance at the gauges with numbers on 'em and verify just what's going on.
ALso pretty useful when the sending wire for the oil press. gauge gets ripped off..
I had Michelle monitoring the gauges in Moab and I heard a yelp and finger pointing at the Autometer oil pressure gauge.. D'ohhh....
But the stock guage showed OK and no lifter clatter.. motored on until we found a good spot to stop and saw the ripped wire.

I know where you can get a cheap replacement.:smokin:

I usually try to put the aftermarket guages in the stock location, I did this on my blazer and it looked really sharp, I may try this on the scout after I get other more important things in order.

I'd have never thought of that; but it makes sense, and since "I belive" all of my factory guages work, I just might leave 'em alone
and add the new ones also.
makkat 12-17-2001, 03:16 PM I left all the stock guages in both the racer and the trail rig. I put 4 1.5" autometer guages in the radio location, volts, oil, temp, tranny temp, the trail rig has a tuffy and the racer........
When (If??) I get the tub ready for the trail rig, I am replacing all of the guages with aftermarket.
I will look and see if I can find any pics to post, or shoot small ones some time this week.
