: What is the most narrow Chevy 6 lug Dana 44 out of?
Flatty 12-16-2001, 07:24 PM I wanna swap in a Dana 44 into a cruiser, but I want a matching rear 9". I can't run full width, because this will be my daily driver. I know if I narrow one side of a 44 4" it will fit the original placement of the cruiser springs. What can you guys tell me about widths?
Dimitri
H8monday 12-16-2001, 07:50 PM Grand Waggoneers are 6 lug about 60" earlier ones are passenger side drop, 80's and up are driver side drop.
liveaxle 12-17-2001, 12:27 AM Waggy front are kinda narrow like H8Monaday said. A Scout II Dana44 front is just under 60". Its not to hard to narrow front axles so you might just pick up whatever is cheap and cut it to the width that you want.
Oops, never mind. The Scout axles are 5 lug.
High5 12-17-2001, 02:15 AM pass side drop wagoneers are 6lug and measure 61.5" wide.
in the 80's they measured the same but moved to a drivers side drop.
notice i did say wagoneer. the fsj cherokees had a wide track option and they would be wider.
pcorssmit 12-17-2001, 07:52 AM Given the awesome strength of the 44 steering joints, I'd avoid custom length shafts. As for Chevy 44s, they were all the same width (at least 6 lug). I'd figure out what shaft lengths you want to run, and go from there. I think Warn's site has a list of lengths and applications? If you can find a stock housing and inner shafts (any make) that suits your needs, the Chevy outer stuff will swap on easily, plus 6 lug Chevy is cheap. I think the big Jeep stuff (outers) is the same, but not sure.

Belly Dragger 12-17-2001, 08:06 AM Have to ask.....
Are you guys sure on the 60"+/- on the waggy front?
I ask because the Isuzu Dana 44 rear is 58 and change WMS to WMS but those that have put in waggy front D44's have had to run spacers to make it look right.

I have installed a half dozen of the driver side drop versions, they are all 60-61" unless you go to an 8 lug outer then they are about 63" +.
When installed with an 8.8 from an explorer, which is a hair over 59", 1" adapter/spacers make them a near perfect match.
ErikB 12-17-2001, 03:39 PM How wide is the FJ perch width? ( I know Toy mini's are 29" )
Anyway, this might help:
http://home.off-road.com/~bibelheimer/sas.html#width
welndmn 12-17-2001, 03:58 PM hmm with a waggy front (60-61) and a EB rear 59, i think you'd be set
71RCKCRZR RYAN 12-17-2001, 05:08 PM STOCK CRUZAH SPRING WIDTH IS 27"...............
IF YA GOT A CHEV 44 THE LONG SIDE AXLE IS 36.13......
CUT IT DOWN 4" A 80-84 WAGGY WILL FIT 32.12
CUT IT 3" A 74-79 WAGGY WILL FIT 33.19
CUT IT 8.2" A 71-77 BRONCO WILL FIT 27.94
SO IT LOOKS LIKE YOU CAN GET A 59" 63"64" 6LUG
OR 61"65"66" 8 LUG
I THINK?:rasta:
Flatty 12-17-2001, 05:14 PM What is the stock WMS to WMS on a cruiser? If I go with a Waggy front end, will that make me any wider? I want to widen the wheelbase, but not too much.
Dimitri
71RCKCRZR RYAN 12-17-2001, 05:25 PM STOCK CRUZAH IS 55"
IF WAGGYS ARE 61" WITH LETS SAY 32"OF PERCH WIDTH YOU COULD CUT A WAGGY DOWN AND GET CLOSE TO STOCK WIDTH........AND FIND A STOCK AXLE TO WORK......
LETS SEE CUT 5 " TO GET SPRING PERCHES RIGHT....STARTED WITH A 33.19 LONG AXLE NOW NEED A 28.19..................
WOE A 71 -77 BRONC ONE WOULD WORK.....27.94....JUST CUT 5.25 OFF...........
THAT WOULD MAKE IT 56"
Randy 12-17-2001, 07:12 PM the bronco axles don't use 297x u-joints. if you want a bronco lengh axle shaft you can get them from warn with the bigger 297x u-joint.

I think that that joint is the 260. You could also just get a set of axle shafts from the wrecking yards from any fullsize Dana44 and have the innner shafts cut to length. Dutchman and Moser charge $85 for a pair of shafts to be cut and resplined.
pcorssmit 12-18-2001, 11:14 AM I was looking at Warn's site yesterday and it looked like you get all the EB shafts with 297s out of factory stuff except one of the inners. I think one of the inners was the same as a Chevy, and the outers the same as a drum brake Waggy (also a Ford).
