I just recently had some inners made from 4340 for $300 + shipping. I was just wondering how they compare to the 300m for the cost.

I ordered 1 300m from Mark Williams, it was $300. if you order a set they are $500.

I guess what im asking is what the strength difference is for the $$

Stolen from a thread Camo posted in the minitruck section:

unlimted tensile strength yeild strength

1054 ( oem) 90,000 psi 75,000

4130 110,000 psi 100,000

4140 125,000 psi 105,000

4340 225,000 psi 195,000

300m 285,000 psi 240,000

this info is directly from sandy cone who has been making alloy axles for the biggest names in off road racing for over twenty years. he didn't just read about this yesterday he has been doing it for longer than most of you guys have been wheeling.

these numbers are only part of the story as each material has diffrent abilitys that lend themself to certain applications.

4130 and 4140 are good material for certain applications and neither one is ideal for axles. 4130 is not only a weaker material it does not perform as well as 4140 when used in a torsional application.

the only reason companys would choose either of these is to offer a product at a low price since the better the alloy the higher the cost

Thanks for the info

But there is a lot of variablility, supposedly Bobby Longs heat treated / cryogenically frozen 4130 (or 4140 I can't remember) innners hold up to 300,000 psi so it is all relative. Also there is a lot of variability beteen manufacturers etc...

so i guess the moral of the story is to get some new inners made and run them till they break. Its hard to say which is better with all the variables. I guess time will tell

Camos prevoiously published rebuttle :flipoff2:

the yeild strength numbers i posted in the other thread were for each alloy heat treated to it's optimum hardness and those are the highest numbers your gonna get with each material in a axle application. claiming numbers siginifantly higher than those is bullshit.

Marlin has this one on his page. I just saw it. http://www.marlincrawler.com/images/inneraxle_250.jpg

pasted....

Mosser Inner Toyota Axles:
These heavy duty Chromoly axles have the beef! Factory and other aftermarket axles neck down right before going into the Birfield. Instead of getting smaller right at the critical spot our design actually gets larger and the inner snap ring has been removed. Larger, tapered splines take the place of the snap ring for locating axle in joint. Uses stock outer clip. Bright machined finish, as photographed. $269 per set.

When I was calling around trying to find someone to build an inner front shaft for a toy Moser was not interested in doing any.
I called them a couple different times  That was a while ago though
