: offset rear Dana44, between 55" and 58"

Are there any offset Dana44 rears that are between 55" and 58"? I don't want to be as narrow are the "narrow track" CJ rears and I don't want to be as wide as the Wagoneer offset rears.

Did early Scouts ever have a Dana44 offset rear?

By the way, this axle would be going under a flatfender.

thanks,

The only ones that you will find that are offset to the right are out of Quadratrac Jeeps. These are mainly found in Wagoneers.

Scouts did not have offset rear D44's.

Cruiser rear axles in all the FJ-40 after 1968 had offset rear axles and are 55.5" wide.

Cruiser ring gears are 9.5", much larger than D44's. Pinions are slightly weaker, however in a light flatty, this should not be an issue, just build a traction bar.

Up to 1979 the 3rd members were all 4.11, after 79-1990 they were 3.73.

61-64? Scout 80s had offset rears, but I think they were Dana 30s. Not sure on the width either. There were also Willys wagons and trucks that had axles in that range, but along with the early Scouts, they would be low spline count and two piece hubs (like an AMC 20). Quadratrac wagoneers and narrow track Cherokees were 58", and if that's too wide for you you could probably get away with narrowing one side. I have also considered taking something like a 65" wide Ford 9" and having the right side shortened by 10". That could be done with any fullsize axle.

I was thinkig about shortening one side of a Dana 60 to get what I want. The only problem is the price, Dutchman wants ~$450 for one side to be shortened and to have a new axle shaft made.

So are Wagoneer rears only 58" wide? I though they were wider but if so then that would work.

I don't quite know what you are saying. If you have a 58" wide Dana44 that is offset 9" then that would probably work. Is this a stock axle out of something or did you do work on this axle?

Or shorten it yourself and have them shorten your existing axle for $55. But yes, wagoneer rears are 58" - same as a scout 2. But I don't know if the wagoneer rears are 6lug or 5 lug. Some of the scout 80's use an offset D44 rear, some used an offset D27

Wagoneers are 6 lug after about '72. was that the D27 that came under scout 80s? I saw one in a junkyard once, and saw the cover was D30/D27/D25 shaped, but I didn't know what it was.

Shortening a rear axle isn't trivial. It takes a jig to make sure you get the flanges on straight or you will eat bearings. Shortening a front axle is a lot easier, the ujoint takes care of any mis-alignments. Still, $450 seems awfully high for shortening one side. I'd get another estimate.

I thought that $450 was a little high also. Part of that price was for a new axle shaft to be made. I don't remember the cost for just the housing to be shortened.

Thanks for the advice.
