I just bought a bone stock 1974 Scout, except for the engine(which the guy informs me is a 368?? from a 66 PU). I am curious about what type of lifts I would need to run 35s-40s, and about whats the biggest tire I wanna run with the Scouts stock drivetrain (Dana 44s with 4.10s I am told) I plan on a S O A C, but am new to scout stuff, so advice would be great, Thanks

I was going to say SEARCH... but too many variables.
SO I recommend getting comfy with the computer and taking some time to just scroll through the messages for the past while... like say year +.
click on topics that strike your fancy and might contain info that you are looking for. And save us from answering many "hypothetical" questions and going over what many of us have discussed many times in the last few years.
Read up on what "we" have done to our trucks, and what we had too do to do it. Lurk and hang out and learn.... WAY too broad of questions will just get Flamed.

368? I don't think so. Was the donor even an IH pickup? If so, you are looking at a 304, a 345, or a 392. Head over to the Binder Bulletin (http://atlas.binderbulletin.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=4) and check their FAQ for how to identify the different IH engines.

35's, you will need to do a SOA and fender trimming, if you ever plan on taking it off road. 40's, you'll need to go fawking huge.

Depends on how you plan on driving it. If you are light on the go-pedal, and plan on pussyfooting around town, 35's are fine. If you like swapping broken axles, 35's are fine. If you want to wheel, 33's are about as big as I'd reliably go with the SII axles without expecting failure at some point.

If you plan to do a SOA, my best advice is to take the time to research the hell out of it, and once you think you know everything you need, go back and research it twice more, then tear into it. I've owned some really nice SOA's that rode better than stock, and I've owned some hack-jobs that were downright dangerous at anything more than 20 miles an hour.

all the really hardcore guys around here, including myself, run six inch body lifts. Try it!:flipoff2: ;)

Not to spam the board, but check out the buildups section on my website. http://www.dandcextreme.com/extremebuildups.asp
You may find "Beater Buildup" and "Project 1" interesting.

No lift required to run 38.5s.

You will, however, need to start thinking about pushing the front axle forward to keep it from beating on the firewall. I'd advise moving the front axle forward instead of cutting out the firewall and brining it back.
Note that if you go forward, you may have axle-to-oil-pan problems at full stuff to address.
If you want to *use* anything bigger than 31s, you have some body work ahead of you..
I run 36s with a 4" lift, cut a lot out of the front (and still cutting), and took the shortcut and just bump-stopped the rear. Not a lot of rear flex there, but I mostly play in the snow anyhow..

My other Scout is SOA and full width, and the 31s *just* clear.

Just for grins, I guess I'll answer.
I just run a spring over and 4 incher springs and ran 39.5 Boggers on fullwidths. Some trtimming was required. Check out the pics on my webpage.
