: I need laptop help
I'm looking at picking up a laptop. I'm not sure which one yet but I'd like to stay at $900-1100. I plan to use it for 1) work - to help me manage different jobs, 2) editing/storing pictures from my digital camera (work and play), 3) surfing the internet through a broadband connection. I would like to add a GPS unit later.
I was looking at this (http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0162945) but I don't know anything about this mfr or specific model. Any computer geeks want to help me?:D

I'm at Dell.com (www.dell.com) right now. I'm looking at the 5100 series.
Thats what I have for work man. It's a nice enough laptop, if you dont care about weight they're great.
usmcdoc14 11-18-2003, 07:27 PM mine was made right before they did the color thing. I like the black but i think it needs some flames :flipoff2:
MossMan 11-18-2003, 07:28 PM I got a 4150 and I love it. It's more power than my desktop, but I can use it at home or take it to work.:D Keep an eye out for the rebates. They have some kinda deal all the time.

For what its worth we have not had the best luck with WinBooks @ work. Losts of mainbord replacements, bad drives, etc. They don't seem to last very long We have since switched to getting Compaqs.
I personally own an HP (ze4560us) which I just got about a month ago. With two $100 rebates it caost me $1100. AMD 2500+ CPU, DVD/CDRW, 512MB RAM, 40G HD, Two USB, 1 Fiewire, a NIC, and 802.11G wireless built in. It's about 6lbs or so, so it's no lightweight, but it's not bad either.
Anyway, I really have been impressed with it. Got it at Circiut City.
Wally World has a couple nice HPs for $989 - $1200 also. Could be worth a look.
Good luck.
mobil1syn 11-18-2003, 09:06 PM the emachines one is a lot of comp for the price, numbers wise. dont know about longvity and such. i am considering this one when i do get one
http://emachines.com/products/products.html?prod=eMachines_M5312 - them punks, prive went up $250 in about a month
Pazuzu 11-19-2003, 07:36 AM I always was a Dell fan, my old one was a $250 e-bay grab, used and abused it for 3 years (usually running at the absolute limit of it's capability) then sent it overseas with Kristen. The Vaio I have now *would* have been by suggestion, except that now, about 18 months in, it's almost lost a USB connection, and the combo drive took a shit. No longer happy with it :mad2:
Oxjockey 11-19-2003, 07:49 AM I just got a new 1100 from Dell for like $699. Nice machine, so far. Needed it for work, so I'm thinking it'd be tax deductible, too.

i really like my IBM Thinkpad T30. the newer model is the T40. same guts but thinner. dunno what it cost as my company gave it to me, but it has all the bells and whistles. built in wireless (antennas in the display frame), ethernet, modem, dvd/cdrw, both a eraser-point and touchpad mouse, and a fancy little light that shines down on the keyboard.
krawlr 11-19-2003, 08:22 AM My first was an IBM I inherited, couldn't kill it, out of my price range to replace.
Second was Toshiba, 2 hard drive crashes and a modem in one year. After about 10 long frustrating phone calls with cust. service, they sent me a newer model replacement......... to someone in Colorado!!!
Third and current is my Dell 8100, been on many trips on and off road. A little battered but still going strong.
I've been into the M/C house brand desktops. Lots of fancy numbers on the outside, generic junk on the inside.
