Hey, Ken! Check your fuses lately?

What are you doing tonight? There's a meeting (we think) about a possible closure of Azusa Canyon. Several of us are planning on heading out. I'll PM my phone number to you.

Thanks for taking the time to do a quality write up.

My father-in-laws a retired sheet metal guy, hes always laying stuff out on the floor like that, and somehow that fawker always gets to within an 1/16 usually a 1/32 of an inch of where he needs to be.

Thanks a million for taking the time to do this writeup. It is very timely for me, as I am about to tackle the next step. . . . buying a bender. :vader: I'm going to be scary when I'm practicing. Tube workbenches, tube chairs, tube dining room table, tube toilet, lol. I plan on getting in some serious practice and some approval from experienced supervision before I start on the life-dependant stuff. If you're ever feeling generous with your time, future lessons would be hugely appreciated by more people than just me, I'm sure.

I have a question for Tin Bender..........I didn't notice anything in your write up (granted I just sort of scanned it quickly) about various dies that are used with the bender. I realize the size of the die is going to depend on the size of your tubing, but what does the Tube Bending 101 course suggest as far as the dies???

I have looked at a bunch of different tube bender sites and there are a hell of a lot of different dies in various sizes. Then within the different sizes there are different degrees the dies will bend to, and I belive different lengths of dies for the various dies as well.

Not that I am particularly looking for a bender at the moment, but I was just wondering if one die makes the job easier than another, or it you need more than one die for the same size tube. For the looks of the site I have seen the dies get rather expensive quickly...........thanks for any info about that aspect.

fatkid
12-17-2001, 10:55 PM
You have the choice in most cases of the 90* and the 180*, nothing special right. Each die also has a Center Line Radius, the CLR will determine what the minimum wall thickness is that you can bend with that die, example tight radius= thicker wall. To thin a wall on too tight a radius and it could ripple or deform the tube in the bend.:)

Super cool article. You just saved me a whole bunch of scrap tube. Thanks. Now, I'm gonna need to make some bends on two different plains, when does bending 105 come out?
It looked from the pictures like you were using ERW tube, is there anything I should know before loading DOM into the bender? I know ERW should have the seam inside the bend, any tricks like that for DOM?

you know I have used a conduit bender to do little racks and things and fought like hell with getting 2 pieces to be identical, but your method was so simple. I cany wait to graduate to a real bender. Thanks for taking the time to share a couple of your secrets.

Thanks alot Rob, and Fatkid! I'm a real rookie on this stuff still.

I hope to be able to do alot more this winter on my jeep(s)
build-up with your info.

ps: You outta try and get an ironworker for your shop....

talk about speed up the work flow..... super nice to have.
and the punch/die/bending capabilities are only limited by
your own mind and ingenuity!

I like your shop.... did you buy the place or are ya renting?

Hope to run into you guys sometime this summer when my
junk is "hopefully" on the trail.

Awwww.... I may just cry :p you really *do* care

Well, I did read it and go out and order a bender.... but I have been itching to buy one for a while now.

I will be building the complete tube rear cab/bed section for my Toy. I have faith in my ability... and faith in my ability to buy some tube to screw around with before I get started on the truck itself :p:p:p

I am a firm believer that a good ratio of 4:1 for thinking:doing generally helps things come out better in the end ;)

Rob…..thanks much. A very well written article that is easy to follow. Not saying it's easy, but your detailed explanation sure is great.

I about pulled my hair out trying to fully follow the JD2 instructions. I finally did my own test bends and did some physical studying to learn how to start bending a few weeks back. I've been using the calculated angle method but your layout method looks handy.

Thanks again for taking the time to put it all together!

Looking forward to future classes ;-)
