: Someone please help a newbie
Surfzup2k3 11-20-2003, 02:07 PM I know a guy selling a 1990 Land Cruiser with a blown tranny, 210k miles for $1300. the engine runs fine. Does this seem like an ok price? If i got it i would basically use what i could (axles possibly) and sell the rest. I have been trying to search for hardware this would have on it but so far i haven't found to much. does it have ifs? If not would the front axle be stong enough for 37s? I know the rear would hold up. sorry for the n00b question but i sort of need a quick answer. A couple other people are looking at the rig.
woody 11-20-2003, 02:13 PM 1990 is the last year of the 62-series....price probably isn't too far off. The axles will take 37's, but plan on http://www.toyotasuperaxles.com to replace the birfs, and may as well do HD inners while yer in there.
Solid axles, Toyota Land Cruiser specific, 8.875 ring/pinion, automatic, split-case
everything is Toyota...they didn't pimp out to Dana or anyone.
Surfzup2k3 11-20-2003, 02:16 PM Thanks for the quick response! I appreicate it. My biggest concern now is finding out if the rear diff is offset. I hope it is not but i have a feeling it is.

solid front and rear axles(basicly the same as a fj60), leaf sprung. 37's with Longflields in the front should be OK...
Heck I would buy it(maybe for a bit less), change the trany fluid a few times and who knows....maybe it's fine. This happend last year, someone told me the trany was shot on a 89, shop said it was dead, fluid OK, asked if they changed it, nope, would they....nope. Finaly I talked the owner into changing the trany fluid....guess what?.....damn thing is fine!

Landpimp 11-20-2003, 02:17 PM 4.11 gear in the 3rds as well.
Surfzup2k3 11-20-2003, 02:41 PM Is the rear axle offset? If so it is no use to me :(

All Cruiser axles are offset. Just a bit though.
I'd jump on it for that price.

Passenger side off set front and rear.
Surfzup2k3 11-20-2003, 02:51 PM Like how much offset are we talking about here? I have a YJ and i need the diff to be in the center. It is a trail rig but also a DD and i don't want constant vibes and worn u joints. Geez i hope this can work out. I have been looking for a toy axles (especially a rear) for a pretty good while now.
natas6280 11-20-2003, 02:52 PM If your that anal about the vibes just have it retubed.
Just my.02
Surfzup2k3 11-20-2003, 02:58 PM WHOA, the guy just called me saying he would sell it to me for 800 bucks!!!! Im riding down there now to check it out, wish me luck guys. lol
Surfzup2k3 12-09-2003, 01:46 PM update: the guy is still selling it but he has lowered the price to 500 bucks. Worse case scenario, how much would a new/ used tranny cost? More importantly, how hard would one be to find? thanks again, yall have helped me a ton already.
FreeRide 12-09-2003, 01:53 PM $500
Id buy it fix the tranny and drive it

See thats the thing, if getting a tranny is going to be a nightmare, i do not have the funds to support it.
cruzer75 12-09-2003, 02:04 PM Just keep your eyes out. Freind just parted out a 62 with decent tranny, sold the tranny/transfer case for 300.00 bucks. worked fine. so they are out there. Not sure if that was low buck or not.
Rear axles are offset BUT you could probably trade it for a tacoma or mini truck rear end which is centered. One guy i know used toyota mini truck axles under his 4 cylinder jeep with cools and RE links ect....worked out good. anyway buy it and part it out and you will make money on it.

As much as i would hate to part it out, i might. I really want to get it going. I would like to put maybe some moderate lift and wheel it along with my jeep. With the cruiser as more of a DD so i can go full width with the jeep.

Shame you are not closer to this.......
Butch
Surfzup2k3 12-09-2003, 02:20 PM yea that is a shame. I want to wheel this thing
Oh well, anyone know what a good set of axles from this thing would go for? again guys thanks for your patience.
texican 12-09-2003, 03:00 PM Matching pair with the 4.11 fine splines $500 low and $800 high.
I gave $400 for a matching pair from a 60 3.73 geared....and considered it a good buy.
Butch
72cruiser 12-09-2003, 03:01 PM so... why not buy it and wheel it.
it'll be 10x better than the heep :flipoff2:
heck drive it everywhere. the tranny's no big deal. you should be able to get one from somebody around here.
ask dd113 if he has any sittin around. he's only down in atl so that's not that far.
there are also a couple of guys down around charlestown that have parts every once in a while. don't remember their names, but when i was lookin for a 4spd for my fj40 i got in contact with them.
good luck. and buy the cruiser.

HAHA, it may be better than my jeep but i can't see myself making the lc into an offroad monster :flipoff2:
Im just way to involved, time and money, with the heep now. Im only 18 and have a poretty limited budget. between living expenses, girls and my jeep, i don't have money for anything lol. Thanks for the guy's name though. I will send him a message :)
FreeRide 12-09-2003, 03:15 PM The solution to all your problems...

Thanks. If i could just use the damn axles, it would make my decision alot easier. Also, did these axles come with the lockers front and rear? I thought i heard something about that somewhere.

$$$$$$$$$ sometimes hinders decisions ;)
How about getting a sm465 for your H**P get a split t-case with an AA adaptor, and use the fj62 axles and you're set :flipoff2: Have a t-case and axles 50 bazillion times better than your H**P
74_Chevota 12-09-2003, 06:15 PM Yep you need to sell the heep. Or tell the guy i will give him $500 if he meets me half way to charlotte.
SpaceGhost 12-09-2003, 06:52 PM Is this Cruiser still for sale? If you aren't gonna go after it, turn me on to the guy. I'll fix it and wheel it, kinda got the jones to get stuck, high centered, and stay dry and warm the whole time!

NICE!!
If you dont buy it, put one of these guys onto it!
dieselcruiserhead 12-09-2003, 11:30 PM No lockers, also a Cruiser 4 speed goes in there nicely and they are cheap, just some work to get it in, but the pedal etc all bolts in from an FJ60. Only 62 I've ever driven was stick, pretty sweet I thought lots of power, expecially compared to a 60...
CiskoKid 12-10-2003, 04:27 AM I've got a Cruiser 3-speed from a '72 Fj-55 I could sell you for cheap, & I/m just upstate in Spartanburg, SC.
Surfzup:
I would like to contact the seller if you are out on the deal. I am not far from SC assuming this is where the 62 is located. Hit me direct.

Surfzup2k3 12-10-2003, 11:23 AM Thanks guys for your help. If i don't buy it i will pass it onto you guys.
cisko, you have PM
Thanks
CiskoKid 12-10-2003, 12:26 PM I sent you back a response.
72cruiser 12-10-2003, 02:26 PM hey cisko,
you live in sparkle city? i'm just down the road at clemson. i live up in fort mill though.
we need to get together and go wheelin sometime this spring. i'm gettin antsy, haven't driven the cruiser anywhere in a couple months.
have a good one man,
jonathan
CiskoKid 12-10-2003, 03:18 PM Jonathan, its good to meet you. I'd love to go wheeling. Problem is, I'm starting the resto on my FJ-40 right after Christmas. Since its gonna be a slow one, I can't say how long it will be before she's back on the road. I went to Clemson, so I'm familiar with the area. We should try to wheel some. I have a 4wd 4 door S10 Blazer for my DD. No real mods besides a K&N filterand a Borla muffler.
