Howdy all:
A quick question....I know it is not a tech question per se....
I am ready to buy a mog, but do I need a Commerical drivers license first? The mog in question is a 1300L, since it has air brakes and is not a 'light' vehicle, I was kinda worrying about this. Also do you get taxed as a commerical vehicle??

Thanks,
Tadd

I have a CDL in Texas for the 2 ton single axle I drive gmc air brake, I never thought about the license requirements, you know there is a 25 year dot exception rite, what year is your truck, have you seen it's actuall papers and checked there vin against what is actually on the truck frame to see what year it is? How much and what kind of quotes have you got from Insurance co, liab full coverage etc, I am going thru all this now myself as I get ready to try to find 1300l soon, good luck and get some pics, there are 2 or 3 guys who used to be here that actually have 1300l on the road, Dan Johnson and somebody else i ferget! Welcome to forum show us ya truck!! CDL is a piece of cake, you will do fine if you have to get one!

i belive that the air brakes are just power. they are really air over hydro. should still work fine without the air, just a bit harder pedal. 99% sure that you don't have to get an air brakes endorsement.

Good question on a 1300L.

I do remember someone on the Unimog mailing list removed his whole air system. So I do believe that they are also "air assist systems" which don't require the endorsement.

I'll ask my buddy that has a 1300 up here in WA.

Most states it is the GVWR that they base if you need a CDL for. 26k is the cut off I think That truck and cargo.

A F350 is rated just under that so that you don't need one. It's capable of moving more.
