my buddy has an 82 wagoneer w/ 360/727/np208. tranny needs a rebuild bad. (my j-10 has the same drivetrain so im interested also). ive been told that there is a lower gear set available from a tow truck. ive also been told that its only avail for the dodge 727. also what stall speed torque converter is best for rocks (these trucks see nearly no mud at all). what about the best friction material/belt to use. anyone know a shop in the atlanta area they can recommend? thanks in advance

There are many hop up parts for the 727 you can spend big $$ if you go all out.
Before anyone can tell you what T.C you need, we will need to know more about your truck.
Is the engine stock? If not what mods?
R&P ratio?
Tire size?

engine stock('74 360) currently running 3.36 r&p (i think) with 33's will be running 4.56 with 35/36's soon. anything else?

if it's got the tranny cooler in front of the radiator, it's got the 3.31 gears (43/13 r/p)
stock ratios for the 727 are 2.45/1.45/1.00
lo range for 208 is 2.61:1

the best bargain in 727 converters is often a rebuilt stock unit, first decide if its a lock upo or not, then ask for hte lowest stall they have on the shelf.
the last time I bought one form a local rebuilder ( exchanged one actually) they listed about 3 optional ratios for a 727 with lockup, I just got teh lowest of them all I dont rememebr what it was.
it was great offroad though, with 3.31 geas and 33 inch tires in a widetrack Cherokee.
the lower gear set isnt really worht the money in my opinion, lower diff gears are about the same money and work in all 3 forward speeds!
move the vent up higher when you rebuild, unless you never get in any water.
talk to A guy named Dana from Pro-built transmissions, ther are in california, I order alot of stuff from them, and got alot of phone advice, NICE and SMART guys!
I havent done one in a while, but there are some free or darn near it things you can do to help it out, the kickdown arm can be had in several ratios some are better than others but dont go to High, the raybestos clutches are good, also the case can be machined for torrington bearings instead of thrust washers ( very durable but very $$ unless you got a machine shop)
trans-go shift kit is about $30 and has 3 settings you can choose from on install.
as a GOOD cooler while its out, a drain plug in the pan, the filter in the pan should be a brass screeen ( not a paper element) and you can run a remote oil filter type also f you wish, a temp guage is good also.
ive got some pics around of some various 727 stuff if you need any help IDing lock up or non lock up, and some vent pics.

lock up eliminates the converter from slipping at highway speeds, basically locks the engines crank to the trannys input shaft.
saves a bit on Gas mileage, and reduces heat at cruising speeds, but its more moving parts ( clutch material in teh converter, and hydraulic circuit on the valve body)
