The shop wants to do 1.75" X .125 DOM. They are quoting $3.84/ft. What do you guys think?

2"X.120 is used most of the time and it goes for about $40 a stick.

$40 a stick. How many feet are in a stick? Is that DOM.

It is a local shop in Victorville, CA Project Fab.

You dont have to use DOM My cage is out of 1.75 ERW thats the most common used for cages it meets all the safety standards out there..

Sticks normally bout 20 ft. No thats not DOM, thats for ERW. DOM is ERW thats been drawn over a mandrel. It still has a seam, you just cant see it most of the time (I have some 1.5" .120 DOM that you can see the internal seam still)

20ft. 1.75" x 1.20 wall = $75.60
20ft. 2.00" x 1.20 wall = $81.25

Is that for DOM? Sounds like DOM prices. you dont need DOM. just get ERW. Same thing.. just a wider dimensional tolerence since its not drawn over a mandrel. For our needs its quite suffecient. ERW 2" .120 should run bout $2 a foot.

Why don't anyof you get in touch with Tin Bender or Fat City:question:

These two are the :nuke: and would probably hook you up to a GR8 source. :D

whats ERW? never heard of this stuff? I was talking to one guy that builds cages and bumpers, etc., he competes in the ARCA, etc. He said he doesnt even use DOM tubing because its over-rated for rockcrawling. He uses regulare seemed tubing.. Is this safe?? I always thought DOM had to be used for cages.

ERW is regular seamed tubing. I agree btw its perfectly safe. DOM is simply ERW thats been drawn over a mandrel. This makes the walls dimensionally even (well actually just less of a tolerence for variation than ERW) and removes the visable seam line.. But it started out as seamed tubing.

Like I said ERW is the way to go you dont need DOM you can go that route but its more expensive, I mean all saftey standard call for ERW the guy who did my cage does alot of stuff for NASCAR here in the east and ERW meets there standards, thats what they use, figure they rate stuff for real high impact, ERW is safe for what we do, like everybody else is saying DOM is just drawn over mandrel.. I mean if you want to spend more money than go DOM but its not safer than ERW hey if you want you can even go Chromoly but then you are really paying there is always way to go overkill, I say go ERW...:smokin: :smokin:

For what its worth, my cage is 1.75" x .125 ERW tubing. Haven't tested it yet so can't attest to strength. The ability to fit the plastic door surround that the soft top attaches to on my TJ was a factor in choosing this size.

The buggy chassis in my garage is 1.75" .125 ERW. If that means anything ;)

I pay $26 for a 20' stick of 2" x .120 ERW here in San Diego. Usually have about $100 in materials for the average cage...

Just in case you actually go down to the yard and ask for it, it's Usually called HREW, not ERW.

Stands for Hot Rolled Electric Weld.

Are steel prices that much higher on the west coast? I'm getting 1 3/4" x .120 wall DOM for $1.59/ft here. I'm also buying it 100 ft at a time to get it for that price, thou.

Donno, I dont normally waste my money on DOM, unless I have a specific reason for requiring a specific dimension internally. Last stuff I bought was 1.25" .219 for tie rods that was $6 a foot for a 22ft stick.

Yep, course I had to special order it. Then again, gas hovers round $2 a gallon here too. Maybe I should have you ship tubing to me :D

$2 a gallon for gas? Thats crazy! But then again, you guys have some damn cool places to go wheeling out there! We don't have those here!:(

Where the heck do you live that gas costs $2/gallon? Here in San Diego I paid $1.11 last week and it's even cheaper in L.A.

Bay Area Steve. More expensive here than anywhere else in CA. However, Costco was $1.14 when my wife filled up last week.. I pay bout the same for diesel and I dont pay much attention to gas prices anymore ;)
