: LT-230 output shaft end play
Serious One 11-22-2003, 04:44 PM I'm in the middle of diagnosing and repairing an unusual growling noise on the CrewCab.
Symptoms are leading me to believe that it is rear driveshaft related.
The rear driveshaft shows no play in the UJ's, but it *might* be bent slightly.
Also, there is some play at the t-case end where the input shaft goes. Pretty decent clunk sound and more play than I feel comfortable with.
JasonM (waterboy) suggests re-torquing the nut that holds it in place.
I haven't cracked it open yet, and am looking for best case, worst case scenarios and any other ideas or experiences.
I was planning on driving this truck to SLC for Thanksgiving and do not want to tear apart the t-case.
Thanks.
redrangie 11-23-2003, 06:01 AM slade,
Is your play "slop" or "wiggle"?

PTSchram 11-23-2003, 07:48 AM Replace the universals and balance/straighten/replace the shaft and call us in the morning.
If I remember correctly, I believe you have put some miles on this truck and some of it has been extreme, I'd bet on universals being wonr and the possibly bent shaft exacerbtes this condition.
Why are Rover owners loathe to replace universal joints on a regular basis? Every truck I have owned that went off-road has eaten universals to the extent they were deservedly the first thing I looked at if a new noise developed.
Peace,
Paul

Let me disconnect the rear driveline and see.
How would you define 'slop' and what makes it different from 'wiggle'.
I'm thinking it's wiggle right now.
Rover Addiction 11-23-2003, 06:50 PM slop is when you twist the output with everything else locked up and it goes free for a bit and then locks and back again the other way. That could be 1 degree or 30 degrees of twist. Obviously less is better. Rovers have quite a bit anyway, that's the driveline clunk you hear all the time. It's basically a sum of all of the slop in the whole system.
wiggle is when it moves side to side. that's bad.. could be as easy as a loose nut (not the one behind the wheel) or as bad as a broken t-case housing. tighten the nut and go from there...

It is wiggle not slop that I saw...
You should see the pics Mike :D
Serious One 11-24-2003, 09:06 AM What I failed to mention was that JasonM crawled under my truck just as his wife was trying to load the baby into their truck to go and have their holiday pictures taken!
I couldn't believe it when he just rolled under there and started poking around.
I dunno what his wife said, but the look on her face was pretty good when she came out and saw Jason under there mucking about.
Post the pics! :D

Ok, so I got dirty this morning and took out the rear driveline. There is NO, I repeat NO play in the rear output flange either side to side or vertically. There is a little 'slop', but well within the normal range.
I am wondering what it was you felt and I heard Jason? Maybe it was just the normal play that you aren't used to? Hmm...
I took a good look at the UJ's and they appear to be fine.
I dropped off the driveline at the driveline shop to have them re-check everything. I specifically asked them to check that the tube wasn't bent. I haven't heard back from them yet.
Driving around in front wheel drive has eliminated the growl about 85%, so I'm pretty sure it is the rear driveline.
I am still planning on removing the intermediate driveline and checking out the front UJ on it.
That is all for now.

Were all the bolts tight?
Bring it back over tonight (or I'll stop by) and check again.
Is it in the front driveway, in gear with the front hubs engaged?
Hey, I like my family album ;)
SUE ROVR 11-24-2003, 05:13 PM Bearing is probably bad, there is a good article on GASP discoweb which brian jackson describes replacing it in situ, I attemted it but decided to pull the output housing off as the box was out of the truck.
