I found a 1999 specialized comp fsr for $300. It is in pretty good shape and deosn't seem to have any problems.

That sounds like a fair price if its got decent components and fork/shock. If you buy it I would then take it to a good shop for a full tune. Thats like $70. Used mtb's can be a great deal $$$.

it has V-brakes, right?
If it does and it fits you good its a good deal.

They are "newer" brakes....... , that are easier to set up and stronger...........that bike should have them.

The brake cable goes straight across the top of the tire
