got a stock 400 and want to swap my 87 TBI off a 350 onto it. I have read they run decently in swaps, but usually need chips burnt because of either non-stock cams or serious engine mods. anyone with experince w/ custom chips? was it needed in a stock motor?
thanks in advance...

I wanted to do the same thing. But I found out that 4 of the intake bolts (center) are angled differently, thereofre, the intake is not boltable. I never went further into the research :(

the bolts are not a problem, you just mill the holes into slots and counter bore them to match the others. you can buy stand alone harnesses. but if you have a big cam you are going to need a custom chip. check out what painless offers for harness and do some searching for custom chip burners. mike

the 400 is stock 1977 vintage. the kit is complete, and i have no problems milling the four bolts. i do not think the fuel requirements of the 400 would be THAT overwhelming for a stock tbi...

if you have a very mild cam you could probably get away with the stock chip. it needs to be a short duration. they make some roller cams for a tbi motor that should work or a stock 350 tbi cam.

give the tech dept at howell a call, they're full of info and will be able to tell you if you'll need a chip or not. the fuel press. regulator on the tbi is set at about 15 psi but an avg pump flows much more. i've read you can pop the setting weld on the stock pressure regulator and just turn it up or pay big bucks for one that's already had it done to it from summit or some place like that. putting the tbi on the 400 is definitely doable ... oh yeah, it's http://www.howell-efi.com i think
