89 D21 w/ Z24i throddle body injection 5 speed tranny 4WD starts and idles just fine. If I push real slow and steady on the accelerator pedal the engine can climb up to 5k rpm, but if I move the accelerator pedal more then slowly the engine tends to cut out and drops down to around 2k rpm and seems to run mementarily then cuts out, then runs mementarily and cuts out over and over until I release the pedal at which point it begins idling like normal.

It seemed like a fuel related issue so I've replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump. No change so I thought maybe the computer isn't telling the injectors to shoot enough fuel so I've replaced the TPS, mass air sensor and fuel pressure regulator to no avail. I've replaced the cap, rotor and wires as well. I've tried retreiving codes from the ECU, but all it does is cycle 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 -5 over and over with both red and green lights illuminating simultaniously.. My code book doesn't explain what this could mean, and it certainly isn't giving me any 2 digit codes which could help diagnose the problem.

Could the problem be in the ECU itself? Would a loose timing chain cause this acceleration problem? Is there an easy way to check the tightness of the timing chain? The only thing left that I can think of is the ignition. Where is the ignition module located on these trucks? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Vacuum leaks? Clogged air filter (I know that's an obvious one)?

check the coils, power transistors, ignition system...

There is a black plastic thing about 4 inches square, that is screwed to the side of the throttle body, if you take it off, it has what appears to be a filament like a light bulb, check that. That thing caused that same symptom for me with my old HB 2.4.

The problem ended up being one of the coils was dead. Replaced it with a Ford EFI one and all is well.
