Need to hear the DO's and DON'Ts so I can learn from your mistakes and only have to do mine a few times...
Looked it up and the info is so spread out and so much it'll take months to look it up. When I figure one thing out the same people change it later so whats the deal?
Your not wasting your time cuz I'm capable of doing this and I'm going to do it...
Read the God Of Suspension thread...

I don't know about do's and don'ts, but an often overlooked problem is the frame and body. Be prepared to have to modify your frame and body to make room for all that new articulation that you will have. Oh and I too suggest reading the god of suspension thread, if for nothing else than the pure comedy of it!
Hey Pig Pen, your :fj: doesn't seem to be working!

I'm not really worried about the links ect just the basics of the actual springs. I see everyone is now solid mounting the frame end, I guess I'll just do it.... My last rig was a 4runner sas and rear three link with coils so I'm not new to suspension work, was just looking for the secrets you only learn by doing it. So I guess I'll just do it my way :flipoff2:
Just need some pointers to keep me on the path.
I've got a good understanding of links ect just would like some info on the spring packs ect.My last rig was 3 link with a panhard and coils this time around I'd like to go trianglated 4 link. Its going in a hybrid zuki all new 2x4 frame, toy axles, 36" tsl sx's front coils rear 1/4 e all custom. I've got a 1.6l fuel injected motor with sidekick tranny and a OTT Kicker tcase To Toy tcase. Going to be caged and I'm carrying a full size 36" spare. lengthened wheel base 90"-100". What springs should I look for (I'm a junkyard kinda guy big dreams small budget)?
...and I've read the god of suspension thread....:flipoff2:
I probably know all I need to know but the more info the better.
Sounds like you got it. Now its time to break out the grinder and welder.

One quarter eliptic thing is you want to have the length of springs longer than the length of the links so that the shackle stays more or less above the axle throughout the travel. If you can filter the BS there is some decent info on link placement on that "other thread" Lots of people use full size long leaf springs. I think it is best to pick a spring pack with many thin leafs even if it is short you can use more than half of the spring by just redrilling a new center pin hole. Many old fulsize cars fit this description
thanks gordan thats the info I need. I've seen and read numerous post on this (I'm a por junky) and its the little detials you don't see in the pics or just don't notice that make the difference

Well, I got a similar setup on my toy with coils in the front and 1/4 in the rear. I think that the key to a good suspesion is balance in your spring rates so that when you go climbing up and around, and down stuff the front susupension is doing as much or close to as much work as the rear. Figure out what coils you want to run and then get your rear leaf packs to closely match it. I'm running Duff coils in the front and F350 springs in the rear, solid mounted to the frame. I am running 3 leaf plus the main overload leaf. I sort of wish I had run 4 leaf plus the overload, but what I have works well. I have also limited the travel to about 35 inches per tire and may limit it some more once I get it broke in and wheel it a while. Balance is key otherwise you get to rolling and lifting the front, and rear wanting to come under the vehicle. 1/4 elliptic is nice, but has way to much potential for flexation that needs to be curbed. Seems that no matter what you do, down travel potential of the 1/4 elliptic main leaf will always work way more than coils will compress because you are bending one leaf and not the entire pack. You could run something to bind up the leafs so they work as a pack in down travel like clamps that your normally see. I may try this as well so that the spring rate for down travel is greater. You know, it's easier to bend one leaf in an arch than it is to bend two or more leaves into an arch. A lot of people don't take this into affect and just throw the pack on there and don't limit it and they wonder why they have all these problems with bent leaves, rolling, bad sidehilling, etc... Sounds like you have the basics just think about it as you go and you should be able to point out the weak spots.
go to a arca evet with a camera and tape measure. find a rig that you like how it works and talk to the owner.(if they have time) and get pictures and measurments.
then just weld something on. once ya get started it will all work out. to get spring rates right on is a trial and error even for engineers so your just gonna have to experiment with it.

When I first did mine I didn't have any clamps on the pack. My suspension was really unbalanced, the front would hardly flex at all until the rear was maxed out.
As soon and I clamped the springs together is made it tougher for one rear tire to droop, and made the front suspesion work much better.

I have spent the last year shortening my limit straps and lowering my bumpstops on my 1/4 elip setup. I thought I knew what I wanted,so I had a set of alcan springs made.Great springs but I built a super high travel desert racer.Only problem is I am a rock crawler. When I finally got my suspension just the way I wanted (and working correctly)it had really no more travel than a good soa setup. The whole reason was to have a well tuned suspension. I am building another truck with 1/4 rears for just this reason. The one thing I learned from my experence was that proper link placement/geometery was all just a guideline."Half of what works should never have in the first place, and what should work never will". ALL IN MY REDNECK SHIM SHOP OPINION There are some pictures of the 4th gen of my truck www.TEAMALOHA4x4.com
Thats all stuff I pretty much knew so I guess its time to just do it!
Camo I'd love to goto an ARCA event or any rock crawl event and check out the rigs but living 20 hrs away from most events puts a damper on that.
