has a 5 speed tranny. Its $2000 with the install kit. You will need to do some drive shaft length modifications to make it fit an 83 I think.

That is basically it. If you want stock Toyota the h55f is the tranny you want. You might check into a Chevy/New Venture NV4500 I think info on adapters can be found at http://www.tpilandcruiser.com Again, driveshaft changes will be necessary.

One more thing - your friend will need the late model "split" t-case (post 84 I believe) that has the oil galley (?) to oil the 5th gear in the H55F.

I have an H55F with the t-case for sale. It will bolt right up to the bellhousing. Since it is an '83, if you got a new H55, I don't think you could use that case, you'd at least have to plug one oil galley thing and do something else (I forgot) to get the 5th gear oiled.
