Seat height, put them as low as you can, give 4" between the bars and your head
Good seats, PRP, Beard, etc
Firewall, build it, pull the engine and finish it
Springs, got to figure them out, Deaver is prototyping a set for Formula Toy on my rig
Gages, put them in before you run it, I think I hurt my motor last weekend
Drivers controls, ARB switch, etc. Put them where you can reach them with 4 points on and tight.
I'll post up the wheelbase when I get it back, but I'm right around 107" . As I drive it more, I'm sure I'll figure out some more stuff. It'll be at Boulevard Brawl on the 20th and 21st, come on down :D :D

Is this advice or things you want to change? How was your approach and departure angle? Are you going to inboard you rear springs? What wheelbase are you shooting for? Did your floor pan sit flush with the top of the frame rail? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm at the point of no return on a few important build decisions. I hope I can make it to the Boulevard Brawl.

Is this advice or things you want to change? Yes How was your approach and departure angle? Great, didn't hit the front or rear, except on an 8 foot verticle nose off. Are you going to inboard you rear springs? No, already frenched in What wheelbase are you shooting for? About 107" Did your floor pan sit flush with the top of the frame rail? Nope, even with the bottom cage rail, that'll be the first thing we go after when I get it back. I think top of the frame rail is what we'll shoot for, should leave enough room for the exhaust pipe to go between the BudBuilt and the seat bottoms.

I'm not quite ready by the rules (metal top, window net) but I do believe I'm closest. We are hoping to make the actual comp debut at Yerington in May, depends on if there are others ready.
Todd C 03-12-2004, 08:38 AM I'm a little behind you, but I am also going to try to be ready for the May competition. I appreciate your list of what to improve. Tell me more about the need for a firewall........

hacked in a floor and seat mount is my guess I wouldn't say hacked it in :flipoff2: , just didn't think about it the right way (some of us don't have a fab shop at our beck and call :flipoff2: ) . The floor plates and seat mounts are level with the top of the bottom chassis tube. I need to get it down to the top of the frame rail. It'll require a little re-engineer/design of the seat mounts, floor heighth and driver's position to work.

wow, thats light as hell. my old rig used half of the frame and was all tube and all toyota and weighed in at 2800. my new one is full tube and very small. i dont see how i am going to be under 2600. lookin sweet by the way.....brad
Lemoore-on 03-28-2004, 09:48 AM Wow, I'm suprised at how well ballanced the Fugly Bugly is. Considering the motor is in the stock location and yours is moved back 8".
JC if you'd knock some of the rust off those panels you'd probly lose a few more lbs. :flipoff2:
Air Ride 03-28-2004, 11:23 AM Todd what kind of scale did you use? I think your about 500 lbs off. No way its under 2600 lbs and JC rig has to be more than 3000 lbs.

They use lever arm platforms with a kind of bathroom scale. Looks like a setup for circle track. I know that there is some built in error, don't think it's that much. I'll go by a truck scale tomorrow and check the difference.
As far as front to rear bias between Short Bus II and the Fugly Bugly, JC has about 80 pounds of crap strapped to his rear deck :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Actually the scales had a conversion factor and we thought it was x2 but it looks like it is a x3 instead (3.27 to be more correct), confirmed by an alt source (diffrent scales) Should read:
Short Bus II
Vehicle weight 3307
Total front 1851
Total Rear 1756

Driver Front 945
Driver Rear 863
Pass front 906
Pass rear 893

This is still the best we could do with the best that we had. These were not nascar scales but rather a set up for the backyard round track guy. The second scales used were my local truck scales. I used the total weight to find the conversion factor for the other scale set up. When Todd has his rig weighed (total weight) we will see how close the number above is. My weight is within 4#'s
i don't think those numbers are corret either. i can't see todds rig weighing more than a stock truck
We are waiting for him to weigh his at another scale. But I dont see how the scales we used would have a diffrent conversion rate per rig:confused:
Camo what is stock weight??
stock weight+dual cases+bigger(heavier) tires/wheels+ added metal (drop down brackets for front susp. - body/bed but + cage:confused:
I would say that the second set of numbers are close but we will know for sure when he weighs it again.
Aaronn 03-29-2004, 07:42 PM I think those numbers sound about right...my 4runner weighed 3770 (- trail gear) according to the certified scale in Margarita

was just using the main leafs to check articulation.

Actually it is a new pack from Deaver that they are making for the formula toy's but they should work real good on all toy's. The packs should be available to everyone soon as we are done testing.
We are using just the main and a block of wood to simulate the width of the pack.
mobil1syn 04-04-2004, 11:12 PM deavers are cool and all but arent they about 5 benjimans a set?

We do not have a price on them yet. I would imagine that they will be close to the other springs that are available but we will see once the price is set. They should have a booth at the Jambo too.
RE:Todd 04-05-2004, 07:56 AM The Deavers are great. With the AllPro fronts I had some flex at TDS. The Deavers went on the week after TDS, then I went to Boulevard for recovery. The flex was so much more, that I got the draglink into the radiator outlet, so we have to relocate the radiator. The All-Pros didn't get anywhere close. The 5150's actually cycle close to 16 inches, and we are using all of that except for 1/2" bottom and top, to prevent hard bottoming or topping the shock. We will also be able to mount the rears in a vertical plane for better axle control. So, you might want to stay tuned for a new player in the Toyota spring market, which has an outstanding reputation for quality and cstomer service :D :D

My only priority this week is to finish Todd's rig. Then I have to make a decision on starting/finishing my rig before the jambo or taking it as is for one more trip (shitty spring's and no shocks :( ) OR I could try to stuff the race truck motor and get it tuned so I can take it to the Jambo to play with too :)
I am sure that Dave will need some help and Joe's truck is still there. I am not exactly sure what is on the to do list for Joe though.

Also the gas tank and it's skid. I had to use the hydraulic jack handle
on the end of the ratchet to get enough leverage to break the large bolts
on the IFS crap loose. Those things were a bit rusted. :D

No pics today but I started to get the hood done. Sucks not having a brake and a shear for sheet metal work. It is not perfect but it is coming along. If I had time I would try to get all the hammer marks out of the roof and hood.
Still on the list of to do's
finish hood and hood pins
spotter strap attachment point
window net
stickers/paint/clean up
check fluids
check tires (air)
Tcase and tranny boots (ordered waiting for them to get here)
Load everthing for transport
anything else Todd, Dtoy or Dave??
Talked with Dave and he added
look into fuse block iterference with clutch.
Lemoore-on 06-29-2004, 10:43 AM JC, Any updates?
RE:Todd 06-29-2004, 04:48 PM When I get home, we're doing new skins. Lance (Penguin) is supposed to be finding the problem in the charging system that keeps killing the battery and the rear rocklights. Still trying to find an option for the rear chunk without bucking up for an ARB. Might have to redo the seat mounts, waiting for word from Dave :D .
Wish some of these other Formula guys would get it together for August :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
