You can use fishing line, but itīd be better to use thread especially made for canvas, not because of the strength, but because of UV light attack. Fishing line doesnīt like sunlight......

I hate to admit that I know this...
I am going to narrow a soft top for my dove tail project samurai and will be doing it with a sewing machine if it can handle the material... the thing is, a comercial machine will have to be used. A smaller type machine will just wreck itself trying to push through the canvas. Also, the needles needed won't fit a residential type machine. I can't remember what thread is used, its gotta be something HD enough not to tear and like billj said the UV thing too. The material from the top may be too heavy even for the machine I will be using so I'll probably bastardize it by hand. The thread part of the seam will be inside so I'm not too worried. It should be okay (leak-wise) if time is taken to keep the stitches close by hand.
There is a particular thread to use... I'f im in the area working within the next week, I'll stop off at a local shop that makes boat covers and see what they recommend.
Hope that helped...

I have a club member that goes to all of these hot rod swap meets and such. Anyhow he ran across a commercial sewing machine and brought it home for a nice low price. That first year he had it he was a sewing mad man. He made bags for his on board air stuff, a winch cover, and altered his top, as well as a bunch of jobs for other club members. He really seems to enjoy the process.
Anyhow, the Samurai tops are sometimes made from lighter materials, so a normal machine might be up to the task. But if you have a heavy top, probably need to locate a better machine to play with. You may need to seal all the new stitches to keep them from letting the rain in.

One of our club members does upholstery and has done a couple of jobs for me. He always sends me to a supplier to pick up the materials. The suppliers in our area know there stuff and can tell you anything you need to know about what materials to use for any specific application.
