: TrXus Radial MT

Anyone have a set yet, and if so, can you compare them to other name-brand radial "MT" tires on pavement?

Here's the scoop, I know how the BFG MT & Cooper STT handle on pavement - both are excellent. The Cooper is cheaper, has a warranty, and lasts longer, so I'm ruling out the BFG. Only problem is this:

LT255/85R16 is my size. And in THAT size and one other (235/85) the STT has a rib between the inner-most lugs. Essentially, the tire has 18/32's tread depth everywhere except in the very middle where it's about 10/32's. I ran one set of these in 255/85 & at about 32k I had worn down ~10/32's and at that point the two innermost lugs became "one". Plenty of usable tread on the outer lugs left, but I ended up getting rid of the tires because of the slick spot in the middle. Up to that point, performance had been spectacular.

Now, I can get the TrXus even cheaper than the Cooper, the lugs are siped, and there's no "rib" in between the inner most lugs. No warranty though. I'm giving serious thought to a set of these, but I don't want to get stuck with tires that'll wander all over the pavement (been there, done that - Uniroyal Laredo MT & to a lesser extent General Grabber MT).

So, the question is, does anyone have experience ON PAVEMENT with BOTH the TrXus MT and either the Cooper STT or BFG MT?? And if so, how do they compare? (yes, did a search ;) )

edit: PS these are for my tow vehicle, so that's why pavement handling is a primary consideration. Oh, and don't tell me to get AT's, I'll be stuck all the time around the farm & in the mud race infields :D

I have 235/85-16 , 10 ply rated (32-9.5-16) on my DD. I have about 3000 miles on them and I'm very happy. There a great tire, for doing 80 mph down I-80 to digging thru a few mud holes and black Ice in Tahoe. I have a 4" lift and have yet to do any castor correction and it's not a handful. I bought 5 of them and they were 499.00 to my door, with free shipping from 4wpw. They make much less noise that my BFG muds.

I've heard they work pretty good. Just here-say though, no first hand experience im a TSL guy myself :D

Tex, I'd promised to give you a report on 'em. Thing is, our second child is due in early February and for this reason my wife wants studs on that truck this winter, so it's got a new set of studded Dunlop RT's now. Those TrXus MT's will be going on in March or April, and I can (hopefully) let you know more then. Sorry about that man.

Well I'm hoping you get them Tex, because I know from you, you will give an unbiased opinion of them. Once I et my Jeep back on the road I plan on getting 35 trxus. Like Old Scout said they are 10 ply for the 16" wheel size, which most one ton trucks call for.

Just get the BFG's thats what you really want face it. You will never want for any other tire. I'm giving you this, so it's your bed make it how you want, and coopers are a second rate tire period and also interco for towing and street give me a break, just get real you are smarter than that:p

Well since nobody else has...

What a brilliant post

BTW..on-topic. a buddy got the Trxus 31s for his 4runner. I was very impressed with them, very quiet on the road and did good work off-road the little he could do before his engine blew up. Who knows when those tires will roll again.

When I puncture the sidewalls on my BFG's :) I will most likely go Trxus

I didn't buy em but I looked at them. Compared to the BFG's and the Wildcountry's I got the tread was alot narrower than the same sized tires.

BTW here's a writeup. Yeah I rule. :D

Actually, I'm trying to avoid that at any cost. I've had more than enough experience with BFG to know that they're overpriced & overrated. Don't get me wrong, they're good tires. Just not as good as everyone pretends ;)

and coopers are a second rate tire period

I've purchased WAY more Coopers than BFG's & NEVER had a flawed Cooper. Can't say the same for BFG

Take a look at Buckshot Maxxis, I looked at Trxs tires, then the Maxxis, the Maxxis 285/75/16 were bigger and had deeper tread than the same size Trxs. They were also cheaper ($115 mounted balanced, tax, everything). They don't have those ugly pencil shaped side lugs either.

Dunlop Radial Rover R/T.

Great tire, part way between mud terrain and all terrain. I know guys that are running these back east instead of mudders and having no problem. They also stick well in snow and ice.

I've been buying Coopers since 1986. I've lost count of how many I've purchased for various trucks & cars. It is the ONE brand that has never let me down. I've had defective BFG's, bad Goodyears, and don't even talk to me about Uniroyal. But, you just keep on paying for a name if that makes you feel better ;)

you know you could also go for the procomp muds. I dunno if you really want a 305/70/16 pro comp mud, but, from what i have heard, they are made by cooper, and right now they have a 4 for 3 deal, and free shipping from 4wp... but that is still $155 a tire shipped to your door.. I duno what to say, I think I am just pulling this out of my ass.. but I have to agree that BFG's are over priced. WHat about getting some bridgestones? I know my grandpa used to always run those on his 3/4 ton GMC tow rig, and loved them, expecally after he went through like 4 or 5 sets of mitchlen tires on it (the tread kept falling off) Never had any trouble with the bridgestones, even with only putting 1k on the truck a year, and having it sit the rest of the time..

They're certainly reasonably priced. But on the other hands, Gateway Tire is down here, which means I see these ultra-cheap mudders everywhere I go. And a distrubingly large number of them are very worn - enough that I'm wondering about their tread life without even knowing anyone that's rolling around on a set.

Oh, and BFG Boy - I had a set of BFG MTs on my CJ5. They were great everywhere I went. As long as it was paved everywhere I went. They should be called the BFGoodrich Radial Sand & Dirt Terrain T/A.

I'm satisfied with MT/Rs - especially on rock, and on the street (My Toy is my daily driver) but I still need a set of something with Interco stamped on the sidewall to go playing offroad with.

One of my wheeling buddies went to MT/Rs after tearing open 3 BFG tires in 2 months (I still ROFL when I think about him getting out of his CJ red in the face with rage, after hacking open a tire on its very first first run, screaming "Tri-Guard sidewall MY ASS!!!"). I've yet to nick my sidewalls.

Like PW said, what about the Pro Comps? Seems like your happy with Cooper and that's who is making them. Let us know what you get.

I've been running a pair of 255/85R16's on my daily-driver 2wd F-250 for the last few months. I do not have any personal experience with any other M/T tires other than the tires I have run- 31x10.50R15 Armstrong Desert Dogs, 35x12.50/14.50R17 custom-cut BFG SCORE tires, and 15/38.5R15 Gumbo Mudders. I have to say, the Trxus tires rock on daily-driving snow-covered roads and ice. Previous to getting these tires, I was considering getting a locker for my rear just so I could get around but now I've changed my mind. I don't really notice any road noise from the trxus tires and I only have about 2K miles on the tires so need more miles before I can comment on tread life.
