: YJ's with Waggy Dana 44 Fronts- Need advise!
RSQJEEP 12-18-2001, 09:49 AM (I read the posts about the waggy swaps, but I could not find any info about the driveshaft angle....)
I have a grand Waggy Dana 44 front axle with Warn hubs that I want to swap into my 90 YJ. I have two concerns that I hope you can help me with.
The waggy's driveshaft goes into the pumpkin below midline (standard rotation) whereas the Dana 30 has the high pinion reverse rotation that goes in the pumpkin above midline causing for better driveshaft angle and clearance.
What did you guys do with the waggy front ends to solve the driveshaft angle and clearance problems?
Should I avoid this swap because of that?
What else should I be concerned about? Spring perches, steering, brake booster, or proportioning valve, etc....:blender:
RoCkSkuLLz 12-18-2001, 10:48 AM Dont be so Anal :flipoff2: the driveshaft will be fine. I run 2.5" leafs ontop of the Spring Over and have had zero problems.. Who cares if its standard rotation the front shaft on a YJ is plenty long enough. If you dont want it im sure there are tons of fellow Jeepers on here that would gladly take it off your hands :D Shit I'll take the axle shafts :D :D
RSQJEEP 12-18-2001, 11:22 AM I'm concerned because it is my everday driver. Will I be able to use my Tom woods front Driveshaft or will it have to be cut and lengthened/reduced?:D
Dust Puppy 12-18-2001, 11:56 AM ok im gonna be master of the f'n obvious for a second holly. 3 words.... WARN PREMIUM HUBS. unlock the bitches drivin down the road.... DUUUUHHHHHHHH:rolleyes:
Jakesteramalamajama 12-18-2001, 11:58 AM Don't worry about it. I have approximately 5 inches of lift SUA (and no t-case drop) and nothing rubs. Even if it did, any monkey could just notch the skidplate to allow more driveshaft movement and then reinforce the plate around the notched area.
And unless you constantly drive around in 4-HI on the highway a lot, your front driveshaft won't be turning fast enough to vibrate much anyhow.
Worry about your CASTER first and THEN your driveshaft angle. In that order. Caster is much more important to everyday driveability on a front axle (one with lockouts anyway).
Waggy front-end caster is pretty close to a stock YJ so it's a great swap. Fear not.

Jake Harsha
P.S.
:flipoff2: :flipoff2: WELCOME NEWBIE!!!:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
66CJdean 12-18-2001, 12:47 PM This is not an issue so don't even worry about it. Unlock the hubs put in 2wd and go.
RSQJEEP 12-18-2001, 03:45 PM I'll have to install 4.56 gears, Detriot, new rotors and calipers, and pads, steering fixes, axle shafts are questionable (haven't pulled them yet)...etc. In the long run, is the cost of the waggy swap as expensive as a Dyna or Currie built 44?
Caster- how do I make sure they are similar? I read in another post that the waggy and the D30 are exactly the same...true or
false?
Will the brake lines match or will I need to replace those as well?
I have Black Diamond's 3.5" leaf springs and a 2" bl. If I go SOA, am I going to need the Avalanche Hi-steering stuff? I want to run 36" tires offroad and keep my 33's for on road.
Will the SOA be overkill? As far as clearance is concerned, right now I can stuff a Pint of Young's between my tires and my fender wells.
(Thanks Dust Bunny! :flipoff2: That was surprising coming from someone who wouldn't do more than trail #3 at Paragon and me with my lil'stocker axles running trails 4 and considering 5. Ok, ok, ok, so I am jealous of your Jeep...truce; what advise can you give me besides "always keep a large broken wooden handle hammer around the garage"?)

Depends on if you are doing the work all yourself.... my guess even if you have someone install the gears and detriot for you it's gonna be cheaper with a waggie 44. Even then comparing a currie/Dyna anything to a waggie 44 is stupid. ones RC ones STD, WAY different setup.
Just set your caster to 7 degrees (don't quote me on that) measured on the flat spot on the top of the knuckle
brake lines... basically match, banjos are different style but the bolt fits through right.
2" Block!!!!???? in the front!? to clear 36" tires... trim for TJ fender flares... and figure 6-7" of lift required to clear them under full suspension cycle.
May I suggest... DO A SEARCH! these are basic questions.
Po' riggity 12-18-2001, 06:11 PM Just do whatever is needed to get that waggy axle under the jeep, trust me, custom built front axles arent cheap.
Good swap though, waggy 44's are nice.. Although, with all that said, I like the 44 I have sitting in my driveway, hi pinion reverse cut 44 out of a Ford pickup :)

mfg4rox 12-18-2001, 06:58 PM I didn't know you were such a big fan of drums scott?
RSQJEEP 12-18-2001, 07:07 PM 2" bl= body lift...I already have the TJ flares...cutting them out gave me about 3" more clearance.
I did do a search about this and gathered a lot of useful info. No one addressed the standard rotation issue- one of my my main concerns. My main question was whether or not to go with the standard rotation waggy or scrap those plans and go with a Dana 44 that is the high pinion.
I'll be doing all of the work except the actual welding. So, aftermarket or waggy?????
66CJdean 12-18-2001, 07:10 PM If you want 36's then for sure do a SOA and no the high steer arms are not need and can be added later. You will need to modifiy the draglink to work though so it will clear the springs on the passenger side.
