Broke the govlock in my 87 2500 14boltFF with 342 gears. Picked up another 14 BoltFF out of a 89 with 373s and govlock. My 87 is smoothe on the top the 89 has ribs. My 87 has good brakes and seals I already have the carrier out. The 89 that I picked up has got leaking wheel cylinders and axle seals. Can I take the guts out of the 89 and put in the 87?? If the housings are still physically the same I was thinking I could take the pinion support and pinion and shim out of the 89 as a unit and bolt into the 87.
Then bolt in the carrier out of the 89 set the backlash and be done?? If possible it sounds like less work than swapping the whole big assed heavy rear end then having to swap over all my brake parts etc.

Thanks

Greg

Yes you can do that easily.

Just check the backlash and pattern and set the backlash to whatever it was when you took it out, and see if the pattern loks the same.

Thanks for the replies. Got the 89 rear unloaded and took a closer look......The oil on the housing must have been blowing back off the motor or tranny. Brakes are dry and like brand new.
Pulled the cover and much to my delight..oil looked like you just poured it out of the bottle....Brand new gearset barely broke in.. and a Detroit Locker-NoSpin  All fricken new:) So I think I'm gonna leave this thing alone and just put it in. I paid 250.00 drum to drum out of a totaled Big Block Suburban:D

Thanks again,

Greg
