Long story short, or dog got locked in the neighbors garage and she had rat poison down in the garage. Our Min Pin ate it, and we didn't know until yesterday (almost 7 days)

She started acting funny last week, we took her to the vet. The couldn't find anything wrong. Then friday night she had blood in her pee and we took her to the vet. Diagnosis, blatter infection. Then last night she got really sick. Coughing, hacking and we called the vet again. Our vet said the only thing that would cause it is rat poison, and starting treating her with Vitamin K. So last night, we got hold of our old neighbor (we moved last week) and sure enough, rat poison. :(

The vet gave us a pretty grim outlook but my ray of hope is that she didn't want to put her to sleep right then and there. So it can't be that bad? right?

Anyone have experience with this? Rubicon is a pretty small dog, 10 pounds at most, and my son and wife just love this dog. I have been up all night, I could bare to tell my son that his "Ruby" wouldn't be here anymore. :(

Rat poison usually consists of warfarin or coumadin (yep, same stuff they give in small doses to prevent heart attack). These compounds work to thin the blood. In toxic doses (as one would tend to find in poisons), the blood is thinned to the point that it will leak from vessels. This explains the blood in the urine, and can also lead to fluid accumulation in places like the lungs... hence, the coughing.

Vitamin K is a coagulant factor, and about the only useful therapy for ingesting rat poison.

I can't tell you that everything will be OK, but I also wouldn't tell you that it's hopeless. I'll offer up a prayer, for what it's worth.

Seems like since it was so long ago (7 days?) that outlook may be somewhat hopeful...hoping so

Vitamin K.... My 10 yr old lab has taken to it before.... took her to vet and shot her up with "Vitamin K". Good as new... oh wait. Just for reference she's done it twice now...i guess it really tastes good.

Did the vitamin K with Skate when he was a puppy.... four years later he is doing fine (but still chewing up library books!)

All you can do at this point is hope for a ful recovery!! Kids think it is gross, but I still keep an eye out for Skate's pee and dumps! :D
