48 hours after he starts the antbiotics he will not be contagious. Unless he lets it go and ends up in the hospital.

I used to get it quite frequently. The doctor always had me gargle with hydrogenperoxide diluted in warm water (5 or 6 to 1). Usually within a day or two things started clearing up. Make sure you don't swallow much or it will make you sick to your stomach.

go to the pharmacy and find some plum extract.

small jar (bout 1.5 diam x 2" tall) full of some stuff that looks like tar.

SUPER tart, you definately wont like the taste. It grows on ya after a few years. Put a little dab of it on the end of a toothpick and wipe it off as far back on your tongue as you can.

Make ya feel mas better :D

NEVER TAKE EXPIRED ANTIBIOTICS!!!!!!
Antibiotics are one of the few drugs that can actually become toxic after their expiration date.

Just go to the doc and have him pescribe some amoxicillin.
You'll love it, my 5 year old does, says it tastes like bubblegum.

Strep throat, caused by the streptococcus bacteria. Same bacteria that causes Scarlet and Rheumatic fever. Both good for being in bed roughly 2-4 weeks minimum with rheumatic fever hitting the heart leaving permanent damages.
Why try to fight it alone when any of the cillins, mycins or even tetracycline nukes it...;)

I cannot stress enough the importance of not self-medicating. You hit it with the wrong drug or not long enough then it is not going to get any better. I know it seems like a PITA sore throat now but scarlet and rheumatic fever are a real bitch. Go to the fawking doctor.

mike
12-01-2003, 10:28 AM
So is having to take massive doses of fawking amoxicillin every time you go to the dentist for ANYTHING because of either of those two worst case scenerios

DO NOT MESS AROUND WITH ANTI-BIOTICS.

If it's the wrong kind, or you don't take enough, it can cause the virus to get stronger, and be resistant to anti-biotics. Then you'll spread it to someone else, they'll spread it, and then we'll ALL have to deal with a new super-virus. Thanks a lot

honestly, that's what you get for not seeing a doctor earlier and self medicating. It's people that aren't responsible with antibiotics that are causing all these crazy bacteria to infect all of us.

Not only that, all the damned anti-biotics that they put in soap and stuff. It's in everything, dishsoap, handsoap, sponges etc. It's a fucking marketing gimmick that is going to end up getting a whole lot more people sick than it will ever prevent.

but for those who care, and not try to go on an all mighty rant, thinking i just took whatever random drug i could find without checking it out first...

i had a fever of 102.6 my pulse was 115, and i was wheelchaired in

they put quite a bit of fluids into me, took some blood and some throat cultures. sent me home 3 1/2 hours later with 3 different prescriptions, one of them being penecillin (yepp the same exact stuff i took before hand jackass) and i've damned near slept all day, and feel pretty good...

since my mom took me, she made me come home with her, so i'm sitting in the country bored, but happy to have someone to feed me!

Your talking to the Strep king...

Some things I know...

1. Every time you get it its easier to get the next time...

2. It can appear to go away, but really be entering Phase 2 that includes permenant blindness as a possible result...

3. It wont go away on it own (in my case) and you should get your sorry ass to the doctor...

so uh you got sick, and spent 3 1/2 hours in the hospital, when you could have been in and out of the doctors office in 30 minutes for around $100 including the price of the perscription, and possibly without the puking. :flipoff2:

Glad to hear your ok. My sister gets it easily (she's diabetic) that is some nasty stuff. me I just get colds and flu easily I've never had strep, thank god.

Streptococcal Pharyngitis
(Strep throat)
What is streptococcal pharyngitis?
Streptococcal pharyngitis (sore throat), or "strep throat", is an infection of the throat and tonsils caused by the bacteria Streptococci pyogenes, also known as Group A streptococci (GAS).

What are the symptoms of streptococcal pharyngitis?
The symptoms of streptococcal pharyngitis include sore throat, pain on swallowing, fever, swollen and tender lymph nodes in the neck, and fatigue. The tonsils are swollen and often covered with pus. The roof of the mouth may have fine red lesions called petechiae. Cough, hoarseness, and runny nose are NOT symptoms of streptococcal pharyngitis, but indicate viral upper respiratory infections. It is important to realize that most sore throats are not due to streptococcal infections. When strep throat is accompanied by a red rash and fever, it is called scarlet fever.

If left untreated, streptococcal pharyngitis lasts from 2 to 5 days; with antibiotics it lasts about 1-3 days. The rash of scarlet fever fades after several days but can be followed by flaking or peeling skin, especially around the fingertips, 1 to 3 weeks later.

How does a person get streptoccal pharyngitis?
Streptococcal pharyngitis usually results from direct contact with another person with streptococcal pharyngitis. Asymptomatic carriers can play a role in transmission, particularly during outbreaks.

Who can get streptococcal pharyngitis?
Anyone can get streptococcal pharyngitis, but the infection is most common in school-age children.

How long does it take to develop streptococcal pharyngitis following exposure?
The incubation period of streptococcal pharyngitis usually is 1-3 days.

How is streptococcal pharyngitis diagnosed?
Streptococcal pharyngitis is usually diagnosed by culturing a swab of the throat. Results of a throat culture are usually known after 2 days. In recent years, a number of "rapid tests" utilizing a swab of the throat have become available. While "rapid tests" for streptococcal pharyngitis have some limitations, results are available in 15 minutes.

How is streptococcal pharyngitis treated?
Streptococcal pharyngitis is usually treated with either a single injection of penicillin or with a 10-day course of antibiotics.

How long is a person with streptococcal pharyngitis infectious?
A person with streptococcal pharyngitis is non-infectious after 24 hours of appropriate antibiotic therapy. Without treatment, communicability may last for several weeks after the symptoms of pharyngitis have stopped. Children with streptococcal pharyngitis should not return to school until after they have completed 24 hours of antibiotic treatment and the fever has resolved.

What are the complications of streptococcal pharyngitis?
The two major complications of streptococcal pharyngitis are rheumatic fever and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.

Rheumatic fever is a serious complication that may rarely occur among untreated cases of streptococcal pharyngitis. Symptoms of rheumatic fever may include symptoms of heart failure, pain and swelling of the joints, involuntary movements (termed chorea), fever, rash, and nodules under the skin. The valves of the heart may be permanently damaged by rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever develops 2-5 weeks after streptococcal pharyngitis. Rheumatic fever became quite rare in the United States during the 1970's but, for unknown reasons, an increasing number of cases have been recognized since the mid-1980's.

Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis is a very rare complication that follows roughly 10 days after the onset of streptococcal infection and results in temporary kidney failure. Symptoms may include decreased urine output, dark urine, mild swelling, usually around the eyes, and fatigue. Hypertension (high blood pressure) may develop. Long-term prognosis is excellent.

What can be done to prevent streptococcal pharyngitis and its complications?
Early recognition and treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis is fundamental to prevent spread and development of complications of GAS infections. Individuals given antibiotics for streptococcal pharyngitis need to take the entire course of medicine according to the directions. It has also been shown that avoiding the consumption of raw milk and products made from raw milk can decrease the chance of exposure to GAS infections.

Individuals with a history of rheumatic fever should receive antibiotic prophylaxis until at least age 40 years and, in some cases, for life.

Should asymptomatic contacts of persons with streptococcal pharyngitis receive antibiotics?
No. Only people with symptoms and a positive culture for Group A streptococci (Streptococcus pyogenes) should be given antibiotic

the point is that antibiotics need to be prescribed. You have to have the exact right drug in the exact right amount for the exact right amount of time.

If you happened to get lucky and have the exactly correct prescription already then that's good for you. But seeing as your not a doctor, that would have just been a guess.

So yes, you did do something wrong. :flipoff2:
