Bob and I just finished this cage for his YJ - disregard the safari top since it was only a test fit!

Material used is 2" x .120 wall 1018 seamed tube
It was bent with a JD2 model 3 bender - www.jd2.com

How come all the wranglers I see have the front tubes so high and the back so low? Is there not enough headroom to have the front tubes head straight forward and then down?

The yellow color scheme just kind of happened,
then took over, hah.
Live in the San Diego area,
Jeep is on the street now and again. I camped next
to some Sons of Thunder guys last year at the
MDA run at Ocotillo Wells.

The back is low because most folks want a soft top to fit. Also the camera angle makes it look that way to some extent.

My YJ cage does that. actually created more head room for the center spreader bars. The soft top rests on it when it is parked, but once you start it and warm it up or drive down the road the softop pulls up and away from the cage so it doesn't rub on it.

sorry, won't have pics until the deluge stops so I can take the top down.

Some Jeep cages come straight from the center hoop to the front - it's mostly a personal preference thing. They are certainly easier to make if they're straight!

What size is the tubing for the seat bars and the dash / gussetts bars?

1.250" x .120 wall was used for these items. .250 x 2" flat bar was used for the seat mounting points.

I just wanna know when that front hoop you offered me is making it's way north... Or do I need to come down and get it?

Seth had offered to take it to Kilby's when he goes up...I was thinking he was going soon but not sure..
Perhaps he will read this and respond.

Sweet cage.
Did you bend it manually or did you buy the hydro w/ it? If you did do it manny, did you have any problems? How difficult was it? Would you suggest getting it hydro?

Thanks
Jason

Thanks!

The cage was bent manually - we have done 4 cages with the bender with no issues. As long as the bender is mounted solidly, it's not too hard to operate.

I have purchased the mounting hardware for the hydraulics and I'm casually looking for the pieces to get it working.

Thanks Leo!

We've got some cool plans to make stuff next year...a few cages, tube fenders, tire/can carrier and maybe a frame/cage for a rock buggy that I can't seem to get out of my mind. I LOVE working with metal!

Just looking at this article as some reference material on my cage project.

I am faced with some unique issues in mine, and was thinking you might have some valuable input, based on your cage design.

1) When you ran the bars across the tub for the seats, co9uld you have gone completely straight, or did you have to bend them to clear the tranny tunnel?

2) Assuming that I keep the height of the spreaders going from the main hoop to the front hoop level, and at door-sill level, will I be OK for the run from side to side?

3) I'm thinking about doing some junk-yard replacement seats any-ways, so I figure while I'm at it I may as well and purpose-build the cage, and lose the crappy Jeep brackets. Do you know what those seats in the YJ were out of? They were looking comfy like a Barka-lounger.

Any thoughts or insight on this part of the cage that would save me head-aches would be greatly appreciated...

The bars could have been installed straight across but I put them in the way Bob wanted them

Don't see why not
